A tribute to a special Canuck
friend from a Abu ciy `I) wn Under'
Dear Editor,
I was in Goderich last year on teacher ex-
change at Robertson Memorial Public
School. While in Goderich, I met a lovely old
gentleman, Lloyd Walter. We became great
friends and have kept in touch ever since I
came home. 'Today I August 291, it is his
92nd birthday so I've been thinking of him a
lot. I've actually just rung him up for a sur-
prise birthday call! I He'd only just got up
as he'd been out partying the night before!
So I thought I'd like to jot down a few things
about Lloyd, and it turned into quite a lot!
Still, I thought 1'd send it in case it's of any
interest or use for the paper. It doesn't mat-
ter is it isn't used -- 1 enjoyed writing it all
down. It brought back lots of happy
memories for Inc!
A big hi to' the 'Signal -Star' people I met
and to the people of Goderich. I think about
last year all the tiine and wish I could be
hack there doing it all again. I miss
Goderich and my friends there very much.
I'm sure I'll be back ther again soon. Hope
so!
Yours sincerely,
Jenni Rankin
Today, as I write this, is a very special
day -- it's my friend's birthday! Not just
any birthday, but his 92nd birthday! That in
itself is pretty remarkable, but that's not the
only remarkable thing about this
gentleman. The person 1 speak of is Lloyd
Walter from Bennliller.
I first met Lloyd when I was teaching in
Goderich last year. My grade :3 class were
learning about Pioneers 'of Canada and ,one
of the kid's Mums told me she knew a 'real'
pioneer who would love to come and talk to
the children.
A 'real' pioneer?!
I wondered what he'd llok like! I imagin-
(ed a frail old roan in a wheelchair with a rug
on his knee, who would senile at the children
with a toothless grin and mutter away a lot
of nonsense!
What a surprise I got when this lovely old
ntleman arrived dressed in his best suit,
tie and hat, walking -on Gail's arm-,This-head—
held high and a glow in his eyes! He shook
my hand and told me what a pleasure it was
to meet and Australian - he'd met some
Aussies in the war and liked them very
much and had always wanted but never got
to go to Australia. He then met the children
and spent the remainder of the afternoon
keeping us entertained with fabulous stories
of the past, starting from when his Grand-
father arrived in Canada, to moving into the
Benmiller area, clearing native land, star-
ting a family, family life, school, the war
years, working on steam boats on the Great
Lakes and in between Canada and England,
and on and on.
The children and I sat enraptured. He.
was so interesting and what a story teller. I
think if the siren hadn't gone for hometime
we'd still be there. ,We'd already missed

Lloyd and Jenni on Christmas Day 1986
Lloyd and Jenni at his farm near Benmiller
in June 1986.
afternoon recess. The kids loved him and he
thought they were wonderful and couldn't
get over how well behaved and ,mannerly
they were ( neither could I ! !) .
After school. Lloyd asked me lots of ques-
tions about Australia and I lent hom all my
books and information to take home and
read.
There started our fabulous friendship.
I often went out to his farm near Ben -
miller to chat with him about his life, or the
early days in. Canada, or about Australia,
and at the end of the school year he had my
whole -class -out f or -a -day- oil--hi-s -f=arm-.-- -the-
highlight being the ride on the hay cart, on
which Lloyd also came. What a terrific day
we had. Lloyd took us proudly along a track
where he'd planted hundreds of trees. He's
often told me the story about when he was
about six year old of 'tone morning going out
the door step facing east, and something
seemed to tell me to get busy and make the
world a better place to live, so when I got my
' farm I planted about 40,000 trees. We have
already taken some and got lumber made,
and hundreds are left for the future genera-
tion." In a world where so much of nature is
destroyed, what a wonderful thing to do!
I'm back 'Down Under' in Perth, West
Australia now but I'll never forget my bud-
dy Lloyd.. How could I?!! -.A month doesn't
pass without a lovely, long letter, and on
every special occasion there's, a lovely card
from him as well. So, on this I',loyd's special
day -- his 92nd birthday - I'd like you all to
know what a special person he is and to wish
him a very happy 93rd year.
. Lots of love to you Lloyd
Aussie Jen, xx

Knowing that if he holds him he has to
feed him and the town's 1987 budget for
transportation, recreation and cable TV
will be gone by the weekend, Fudge has
McVey extradited a half hour after the
bust.
So ends our drama with -.the hanging
question: "Why didn't McVey hide in
Tokyo disguised as a Suomo wrestler?"
But really .wasn't life .a lot better when

You did good Dan. You got your man.
