PUC awards
facility tender
at meeting
PUC BRIEFS
The Goderich Public Utilites Commis-
sion awarded a tender for Backwash
Treatment Facilities at its September
meeting.
Maple Engineering and Construction's
bid of $231,980 for the construction was
aecepted.
Also bidding for the job was Stone Town
Construction of St. Mary's who bid
$268,860.
The contract for the backwash treat-
ment facilities is part of the current water
treatment expansion project.
The water treatment process creates
two primary waste streams - settling tank
sludge and filter backwash waste water.
Until recently, both streams were
discharged.. untreated directly into the
lake. However, the Ministry of the En-
vironment has requested the Goderich
PUC to provide treamtment facilities for
both waste streams.
The cost of such a project was estimated
at $220,000 in 1986, Evert Middel, PUC
manager, noted. The cost has since risen
almost $12,000 to the accepted tender of
$231,980.
Good weather this summer has put the
water treatment expansion ahead of
schedule and even adding the new
backwash treatment process, the project
is expected to be completed by the
December 1987 deadline.
Work on the backwash treatment facility
will begin once work is completed on the
water treatment facility, Middel noted.

Robertson Memorial Public School had a
temporary mascot Monday when an uniden-
tified bird landed in the school yard at morn-
ing recess and stayed. The bird, thought to
be a cross between a wild goose and a
Canada goose by Ministry of Natural
Resource officials in Wingham, was fed
some corn and water by the teachers and
students. Here, grade 8 student Josh Reid
tries to get a closer look at the young bird.
