campaign
raises over
X7,000 in area
Dear Editor,
During the week of May 25 - 30 The Maple
Leaf Chapter IODE sponsored a very suc-
cessful Red Cross campaign.
From the generosity of the citizens of
Goderich and District, the sum of $7,139.86
was turned over to Divisional Headquarters
in London.
I would like to thank all the canvassers,
team captains, organizations and industries
for their time and donations which have
resulted in a successful 1987 campaign.
Sincerely,
Linda Murphy

Closing abortion
clinics illogical
Dean Editor:
I am wondering about the' individuals
who advocate the closing of abortion
clinics, The logic of such action evades me.
They seem to be dealing with the results of
the problem instead of the roots.
The individuals who patronize these
places' are there because of the misuse of
drugs and alcohol. There are a percentage
who are ignorant -of the methods that can
be used to properly plan a family., and. do
not have the proper collaboration of their
mates.
Adoption is the solution, and if the ones
who want to close' the abortion clinics
would concentrate on adoption and give
them another choice, I'm sure a large pro-
portion would be persuaded to 'do so.
The government of Canada seems to be
syrnpatheticto refugees landing on the
shores of 'Canada. It's high time they
directed some of their sympathy to the
potential Canadian refugees within the
country. .
I would also like to remind the govern-
ment that within an 18 -year period of time,
these Canadian refugees would merit a
vote. I hope this stimulates some action on
their behalf.
Problems are not solved by covering
them up or ignoring them. If all the abor-
tion clinics in the country were closed, it
would only stimulate a haven for quacks
and incompetent physicians. When it is in
the open, it can be periodically examined
by government officials.
Prostitution, illicit sex among juveniles,
and homosexuality will all have to be
monitored by the government to stop the
spread of AIDS, The public will demand it
eventually.
Sincerely,
N.J. Minaker

Former resident appalled by site
Dear Editor:
As a former resident of Goderich whose
family connections to the town and im-
mediate vicinity date from the 1850s, and
as one who is proud of the history and
heritage of Goderich, I am appalled by the
state of neglect into which access to
Dunlop's Tomb has now fallen.
Although an Historic Sitesign marks the
general direction to • the Tomb from
Highway 21, an unsuspecting tourist
and/or one unfamiliar with the location
must- easily become bewildered as there
are no signs at the base of the hill, the zig-
zag "path" is overgrown and tangled, and
what were once steps are now virtually
obliterated. In addition, on the day of
our visit (Aug. 29), the base of the hill was
littered with broken glass and beer bottle
caps, while the disappearance of the ma-
jority of the gate at the Tomb itself sug-
gests that vandalism has now become a
problem. The ascent to the tomb must be
nearly impossible for any elderly or infirm

individual and certainly the whole situa-
tion does no credit to the town or. to the
memories of "Tiger" and Robert Dunlop,
both of whom are historic figures whose in-
fluences transcended the Huron Tract.
The matter is all the more disturbing
given that Goderich has celebrated its
160th anniversary, is now promoting
"Dunlop Days" as an annual event, and
there is now a project underway to erect a
statue of "Tiger" Dunlop next year.
The Town, whether by itself or in concert
with Colborne Township and/or the Pro-
vince, should move expeditiously to rectify
this state of affairs.
Respectfully,
Larry Mohring

Sports equipment to be taxed
Dear Editor:
Are you aware of the government's plans
to apply sales tax as of January 1, 1988, on
sports equipment in a.different manner than
has been the case in the past.
If these changes become law:
1. Sales tax will in general be computed on a
higher base than previously as it will apply
to extra costs in getting the goods to the
retailer;
2. The increased taxes will not apply to in-
tegrated organizations who control all buy-
ing, distribution and retailing. functions;
3. So the tax increase is on the backs of
small business and small-town Canada;
4. It's unfair to single out the Sporting Goods
Industry by applying increased taxes when
many less essential commodities continue
to. be taxed at former rates;
5. If the taxis applied as proposed, the effec-
tive rate of tax will be increased by 31'2
percentage points to about 15'2%.
'Here's what you can do. Call or write your
local Member of Parliament and express
your views and•concerns. It's very impor-
tant and we urge you to act today.
Thanks for your participation,
Canadian Sporting Goods Association.
