Beverly Jeffrey, manager -co-ordinator said seven of -the nine greens sustained damage. The two greens, number five and eight, closest and furthest away from the club house were untouched. Ground- skeeper, John Mathers estimates the cost of repair to each green at between $300-$400, bringing the damage total to around $2,800. Nothing was stolen when the pro shop was broken into. However, the junior boys golf trophy was removed and it was found smashed near the tennis courts. Entry was gained to the pro shop by smashing a side window which triggerd an alarm. Goderich Police arrived on the scene at 10:51 p.m. Monday, three minutes after they received the alarm call. "They did not even steal a bag of potato chips,"said Jeffrey. Police are not sure if the vandalism and the break and enter are related. They have suspects but their investigation is continuing. The O.P.P. investigation unit was on the scene. Goderich Police Chief Patrick King said it is difficult to catch vandals. "Vandalism is quite often done without rhyme or reason and it is very difficult to come up with the culprits," said King. Jeffrey believes, because of the extent'of the dafnage, more than one person was in- volved. King said there is no indication of how many were involved but he suspects it was more than one. The vandals used flag poles, tee markers and sand trap rakes to damage the greens. The words `drugs," 'wasted' and "`high' were dug into the greens, along with obsenities. Mathers said the greens will have to be re -seeded and they will not be back "in shape" until next spring. Early in July flags and flag poles were stolen from the Maitland and were recent- ly recovered. King does not believe the two incidents are related. According to Jeffrey a set of flags costs over $30 and flag poles around $35 each.
