Goderich SIGNAL -STAR P.O. BOX 220, 1 HUCKINS ST., INDUSTRIAL PARK, GODERICH, ONT., N7A 4B6 By Brewster The GMSI, season began on Mother's Day May 10. Since then, 300 regular season games and 78 play-off games have been played. That's a lot of ball in 119 days! Surely, by now we must3cnowswcho_ tciLl-bo advancing to our semi final round. Not so guys! With only six games remaining, many spots are still up in the air. I've been doing this scheduling and write-up for more years than my knees have left and I've never seen the race so close and the battles so intense. And this was achieved without a draft system. Simply amazing — but then, so too is our sport of Slowpitch! Let's start with C Division this week. The Lakeview Ranchers have Cl locked up as they now post the only undefeated record in the league. After that it gets pret- ty messy ! The key match -up is Murphys Law vs. Local 1863. If Local 1863 wins, they move into an eight point tie with Murphys, but gain the final play-off position as a result of their win. Should Murphys win the game, we will have a three way circular tie for second place. It is circular in that Murphys beat Little Bqwl who beat Chisholm TV who beat Murphys. Since all three would advance anyway, we would look at run differential to deterrrline their relative standings. At present, Little Bowl has a plus 28, Chisolm TV has a plus 32 and Murphys still have the key game to play. This key match -up will have been played. by the time you read this! Rather anti- climactic isn't it? B Division, the hornets nest of slowpitch all year long, seems to have cooled down. Suncoast Restaurant, plagued with in- juries and old age (-may go together) drop- pedtwo straight this week to fall to a solid B3 finish. Though Home Hardware could move into a numerical tie withDearborn, if they beat the Raiders, Dearborn would stil gain B4 on the strength of their win over Home Hardware. The only real question is who will finish first? Parkhouse must win their final game to clinch it, otherwise they are doomed to a second place finish and a short losing series to Suncoast `1 sorry Wal- ly, I couldn't resist it! ) Now for A Division. They have screwed things up so badly,. that I don't even want to talk about it — but here goes! Goderich Chrysler, written off long ago by all but one, rallied to - down B—oyes 5-2 amt-knock.--r5tiirs' off Ideal Supply 10-5 in eight innings. Now Shanahans they are back into contention. At the same time, Canadian Tire lost two straight' They owed me one and got back, plus a bit , with those losses! Should the Coyotes defeat Thruway ,•we are--th n. into a four-way tie for second • - place, unless the Bulldogs can also defeat Sunys — in which case it is a three way tie for third! All teams are urged to contact • me as soon as the outcomes are known' Run differential is not used to eluniriate'. a team from play-offs' We could well be forced into a "mini" play-off round to &etermine which team is eliminated' All this is far too much for my brain to comprehend. We'll have to sit back and await the outcomes of our final six games. 'I would encourage team reps to submit scoresheets "immediately" following the game. I need them to plan accordingly ' Also, the next general league meeting is set for Mon. Sept. 14 at *14) pm. 'Nomina- tion forms for next year's'executive as well as recommendations for constitu- tional revisions should he in to 'Pini Frawley by then. • For those with long; memories, you tinny now recall earlier predictions and realize that they were 75 percent accurate. Next week you will read the Brewsters picks fur semi final action. I could tell you now but why waste a column' Team G W I. A. The Oldtimers clinched their title after beating Sifto Goodtimers 5-4 on September 2. The win gave the Oldtimers a 6-1 win record in the standings, while Sifto, Go-4-Ettes, Night Owls and Samuelsons each accumulated three or more losses to put their hopes of winning at a standstill. Oldtimers' winning game was a tough one from the first pitch, with the Sifto team ommitting three errors on a hit to centre field which gave Shirley Schmidt of the Oldtimers a homerun in the fifth, to'take a 5-4 lead. Sifto's last at -bat had their -opponents on their toes, as they managed to get the bases loaded with two out. But all attempts to score the tying run were overpowered by the Oldtimers" team. Although the Oldtimers meet with the Go-4-Ettes on .September 8, win or lose, the Oldtimers Sunset wins BY ROZ ELLIOTT Sunset hosted Interclub Sunday and rallied in victory as our own club scored its fourth consecutive win. Final tally reveal- ed Sunset capturing X224 points overcoming Kincardine, Walkerton and Wingham. Also victorious this week were Mixed Two -Ball champions Joan McDougall and Marcel Richard followed•by Al MacDonald and MaryLynn Telford. Men and ladies should book their tee -times now for Closing Rounds on September 19. On Ladies' Nite, Kathy MacDonald won low gross in first flight while Verna Kane took low net. 'Congratula- tions ladies! - The 'B' division teams however, are still battling it out with Bruno's and Hot Shots tied at six wins each. The other three teams; Nile, Meneset and Double Blue, have also accumulated three. or more losses, to put them out of playoff title ter- ritory. Stay tuned for more 'B' division -ac- tion this week. • . Pairs advance in Canadian Open Bridge championships Mary Donnelly teamed with Eleanor Er- skine to score 74 points and advance to the next round in Canadian Open Pairs Bridge Championships. Qualifying round play was held at the Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club, Sept. 1, with the top five teams advancing. Bev and Henry Perala took second with 69 points, Anna Godley and Verna Worthy were third with 64 points, Don Godley teamed with Archie Hamilton to score 54.5 and Dawna Sproule and Mari; Hall finish- ed fifth with 54 points. The Club was saddened by the recent loss of one of its charter members. Frank Donnelly had been an active player since the early thirties, when the Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club was formed. Over the years, Mr. Donnelly participated in many Canadian and international tour- naments. His keen wit at the bridge table will be missed.
