Armstrong, who pitched five games, allowed only three runs on nine hits over 23 innings, while striking -out 30 to win A divi- sion MVI' honors. Other Scores It looked like it might be an all Goderich final as Goderich Tire pitcher, Jim Peet fanned seven and allowed only four hits in their semi-final against Henderson. However, an error in the second cost them their only run as they dropped.' a 1-0 decision. The Orioles road to the finals was no easier as. they blanked Hickson 4-0 in the semis, beat Nairn 4-2, lost to Puslinch 3-1 and squeaked by Merners 8-7. Goderich Tire, before losing to Hender- son, beat Seaforth 3-2, beat Oxford A 9-5 and West Corners 4-1. The other two Goderjch teams in the tounament, Hayters and French, did not fare as well. French heat Zurich 5-2, won 3-2 over Alviston and managed only five hits in a 2-0 loss to Henderson. Hayters Won 3-0 over Wilkesport, beat Nissouri 7-0 but lost 11-3 against Hickson. (photos by,Dave Sykes) • Power and greed fuel international incidents -from page Team Iran • Offensive Co-ordinator •and spiritual leader Ayate'llah Ruhollah Khomeini, has whipped Team Iran into a frenzy. After early setbacks to Team Iraq, they mounted a strong come -back to take the lead on points until the competition became open to any country interested in money, oil and ;glory. Supremely confident Iranians have vow- ed to defeat any country foolish enough to take the field against them and have developed a fierce rivalry with Team USA. What the Iranians lack in equipment and training they should make up for with an insane willingness to sacrifice their bodies. Even though Iranian players are famous for shooting holes in clouds, anyone can hit a target as large as. a tanker. If Iran takes an early lead, watch for big name teams to drop out of the competition. Team Iraq After going to the trouble of putting together and training a team, Team Iraq found they had no one to play with and pro- mptly went on the road to Iran. Early suc- cess led to'failure and ultimatly:stalemate, with neither team possesing the fire power to overcome the other. Iraq is a minor • league team - playing with major .league equipment in a game that has gone beyond their capabilities. Team France Team France is the one country involved in the Gulf that worries me the most. If the USA has a poor track record than France's is awful. They have not had a winning coach since Napoleon Bonaparte and he lost in the finals to both Russia and England. Consider this: Hitler drank French Champagne in Paris, they had to give up against Algeria and they lost to Vietnam before anyone even heard of the place. France says they deserve to field a team. I think they will just get in the way. I have no intention -of making light of a potentially dangerous situation, but the motives behind international affairs are the same as sports and life —power, greed, We've given lots of kids a good home. John Fogerty in his song •Run Through The Jungle' said• it best: "Two hundred million guns are loaded; Satan cries, Play Game!" Spooneritsms: Here is a trivia question: • who is the only Toronto Maple Leaf player in the Canada Cup? Ed Olczyk; who was recently traded along with Al Secord from Chicago to Toronto for Rick Vaive, Steve Thomas and Bob McGill, played for Team. USA. Olczyk is the key to the trade. A native of Chicago, the six -foot -two, 195 pound winger did not play well in his home town, but he may blossom in Toronto. I hope they don't make Wendel Clark the new Leaf captain. I would like to see him play for Toronto for many years. Leaf captains don't seem to last very long. When asked if he thought the series bet- ween the Blue Jays and the Tigers in Detriot in October would decrde the East champion, Detriot pitcher Jack Morris said no, they should be five games ahead by then.
