Steve Arbour smashed a three -run;
opposite -field double in the fifth inning to
break a 2-2 tie as• the Goderich Orioles
senl on to beat the Henderson Cowboys 6-2
for the R Championship at the 19th annual
Labour Day E'astball Tournament.
Orioles catcher, Steve Haggit, who bat-
ted .590 and caught five games was named
•
tournament MVP. `
It looked like the Orioles were going to
squander their best chance to break the
giiiw open, until Arbour hit his .double.
Steve E'rayne was hit by a pitch, pitcher
Bob Plunkettbeat out a hit and Bob
(;rahain squirted one through the infield to
load the bases with none out. Henderson
pitcher, Jun Blakely fanned Haggit and
gunned down Frayne at the plate on a John
Lenny tapper to the mound. Arbour, the
nest batter, took the firstpitch, on the out-
side part of the plate, and hit a one hopper
to the fence in- left field to clear the bases
and give the Orioles a 5-2 lead.
Mike Frayne hit a inside -the -park home'
run scoring Steve Frayne, who had singl-
ed, as the Orioles took an early 2-0 lead in
the second inning. Henderson centre
fielder, Mike Bartram was injured when
he crashed into. the fence, trying to catch
Mike E'rayne's shot and was unable to get
the ball back in to prevent the runs.
Plunkett allowed Henderson to tie the
game fourth, but fanned four batters and
shut -down Henderson the rest of the way to
record his fourth win of the tournament.
Plunkett •was also runner-up in MVP
voting with four wins, 37 strike -outs and he
. allowed only 10 runs on 23 hits over 28 inn-
ings, while batting .300.
Orioles pushed across their final run in
the sixth as Henderson short stop, Lido
Itaffin threw wild to first on a Plunkett
grounder-, allowing Steve Frayne to score,
:after he had singled.
Lennon leads
A Division
Jim Lennon had two- hits, including a
homer to .lead his Orangeville"Daisy•team
to a 3-2 win over. Petrolia to take the A

Persian
G -1I• oil
tanker race
In my continuing series of little publicis-
ed sports, I present the Persian Gulf oil
tanker race.
The object of the game is to escort a
;low• -moving , huge ship -sitting duck-
:arrying extremely flamable petroleum
A-oducts through a narrow body of water
filled with mines, heavily armed fanatics
in speed boats and skies full of warplanes
piloted by poorly -trained, near-sighted,
Kamakazes. It may not sound like much
fun to you but bear, in mind that every ma-
jor country in the world is clamoring to
send a team.
What originally started as a small pick-
up game between two relativly unimpor-
tant, but highly motivated teams -Iran
and Iraq- has blossomed into a event of
global proportions with national pride and
international esteem on the line. While
most sports are played with an inexpen-
sive ball or puck, this game is played with
oil. Everyone needs it, eveyone wants it
and if the Arabs, who have it, want to play
games with it than the U.S., the U.S.S.R.,
France, Japan and West Germany are
happy to field a team.

Team U.S.A.
Led ,by Head Coach Ron -got to start a
war bfore I go- Regan, team USA has
played well. Except for minor equipment
problems -minesweepers that can't sweep
and an inability to discern the good guys
froin the bad, they have managed to bring
several tankers through the Gulf and touch
home.
As comedian Bill Murray once said, the
USA is 3-0-1 in international competitions
of this sort. However they recently suf-
fered an upset loss to a small country in
Indo-China and have a history of
underestimating their opponents. They do
talk agreat game but when push comes to
shove they will be there in the finals.
Team USA is smart enough not to use
their own tankers, rather they have bor-
rowed Kuwait's.
