MENNW
ROUND 'N
ABOUT
With Martha Rathburn
Did you ever have a cricket in the house?
You can't find him, he sings - or grinds
out. his song from every corner of the
room, and just when you are sure you have
located him, he sings - from another
corner?
Really frustrating!
With my trusty can of Raid I attacked
him - but I couldn't win. I could still hear
him an hour later after I had my head
under the covers. I must have been tired
because suddenly it was morning - and no
cricket. He must have walked into a spot I
had sprayed.
The weekend has flown, the audience
and the ball players have disappeared.
Two tired, sunburned men flaked out very
early and my niece, Marion, and.I have a
lot of fun things to remember.
We knew where the men would .be all
day, so we went wandering. I showed her
all the new homes - and the old, old ones -
we hit every front yard sale in town,
visited nearly all the stores - she was quite
impressed - so was 1. We went to Bayfield
and enjoyed all their little shops... just
looking. We both have so many things
stacked away from other years .. it's a
joke.
Sundays "Flea Market" is always a
challenge, and the people you meet are
always in a good mood.
I met so many ofd friends I hadn't seen
for years. One of the prettiest ladies I know
- hasn't changed a bit, was Phyl Martin,
Maxine's sister, who lives in Washington
area on the Pacific side of the world. I was
so thrilled to see her.'...she and I worked
together for a §bort while before she took
off for the far coast.
There were others who I hadn't seen in.
many, many years... I never forget a face
and the voice - but the names just don't
come when I need them. Very frustrating!
.Another lovely lady I hadn't seen in
many a year was• Bea Bowman _ and she
has been here in our area for a year and
busy, busy we hadn't met.
"Little Joes" is a great meeting place.
Walt likes going •there because you are
sure to meet people you know. You are a
stranger only once, it seems.
I am very proud of the way our town is
spreading. Lovely homes just springing up
everywhere. Luckily we have many very
talented builders who enjoy what they
build and are proud of their work - and the
results, we too, can enjoy.'
Well, now,, how about settlin' down and
getting back to work? It seems the
September holiday even without parades
and music, is the very best holiday of the
year, for most people.
Love you all,
Martha.

Yesterday marked the first day of fall for some Goderich children who headed back to
school. Some were returning for another year while others, like kindergarten children, were
stepping into a whole new world. Here, at Victoria Public School, two of Mrs. Carol Egener's
students, Christopher Wraith and Ryan Maddox, shake hands to welcome eachother on their
first day.(photo by Yvette Zandbergen)
Bantam fastball team champs
The McDonald's Bantam Fastball Team
defeated (Sarawak) Owne Sound on Sunday
12-3 to win the best of five WOAA final series
to become the WOAA "Major A" Bantam
Champs for 1987.
Mike Hurd combined with Mike Rompt to
hurl a one hitter in the final game to secure
the win.
The Bantams played excellent defensice
ball throughout the series allowing only
eight runs in the three final games, while
scoring 26.
Batting leaders were Brian Lane, Dan
Crawford, Mike Duckworth,. Kevin Moss
and Mike Hurd.
The 1987 edition of the McDonald's Ban-
tam team is one that the town should be pro-
ud of. The team includes: Infielders: Mike
Duckworth, Sean Currie, Kevin Moss, Brian
Lane, Jamie Habel, Dan Crawford, Jeromy
Denomme; Pitchers: Gerry Hartin, Vince
Doherty, Mike Rompf, Mike Hurd; Out-
fielders:
utfielders: Steve Sturdy, Rob Dempsey, Mike
Alcock. The team was coached. by Ray Har -
tin and Ray Hurd.
Special thanks for the support and en-
couragment from our many loyal fans and
parents, and to Brian Dent"McDonalds
who made the team possible through- his
sponsorship.,
Peewees third in tournament
The Goderich Peewee Boys Fastball
Team made it to the final three teams left in
the Provincial Championship Peewee 'C'
Tournament held in Garson on the weekend
of August 28-29 but in the end they carne up
short due to a lack of key hits.
Goderich had defeated Stittsville 7-6 in
nine innings and New Liskard 18-6.
However, they lost their next two games to
Jordan 9-4 and Garson 8-3 and were
•eliminated from the tournament.
The lack of key hitting was especially
costly against Garson as Goderich had run-
ners in scoring position on several occasions
but failed to score them.
The team can be proud of finishing in the
top three of the tournament as they played
against the best Peewee. 'C' fastball teams
in Ontario.
The team would also like to give a special
thank .you -to -Steven Zuber_who joined- the
team from the Walkerton Peewee team for
'the tournament.
Goderich is presently playing in the
WOAA finals and are down two games to
none. Goderich has to win in Wingham on
September 8 or their season is finished.
