Tourist booth open for extended hours
The Goderich .Information Booth has ex-
tended its hours this year in an effort to
help more people who require tourist
information.
The booth opened on the Easter weekend
this year instead of the ususal Victoria
Day weekend. However, counsellors
worked only weekends until the Victoria
Day weekend. The booth will remain open
until the end of the Thanksgiving weekend,
October 12, instead of closing just after
Labour Day as has been the practice in the
past years.
Robin Stuart, tourist co-ordinator for
Goderich, said the change was needed to
"assess the flow of traffic earlier in the
season and to see if we could provide
assistance to earlier travellers."
Working at the booth this year were
Shiela Corriveau, Lori Jane Lamb, Kellye
MacAdam and Khamadi Weerasooriya:
The -girls, who worked 40 -hour weeks, took
turns on 12 -hour shifts (9 a.m. to S p.m.)
with time off for lunch and dinner. Stuart
noted volunteers have also helped_with.the
tourist booth this year, both prior to school
closing while some will help thro.ugh to
Thanksgiving.
Counsellors at the booth can help
tourists with accommodation, local attrac-
tions as well as directions. Although
.,tourist figures . are not yet .available,
counsellor Lori Jane Lamb felt the booth
has been busier this year than last.
This is Lamb's second year working as a
counsellor at the tourist booth. She is cur-
rently entering Grade 11 at GDCI.
"The busiest time of the season was the
last two weeks of July. It was the warmest
time of the year. Many people were com-
ing through Goderich, heading to Tober-
mory, and gyve convinced them to stay in

Goderich by showing them our general
brochure of the town," she said.
She noted the booth has received visits
from residents of Michigan, Europe, and
Japan as well as other states and
provinces.
The most asked question of the
counsellors concerns accommodations and
attractions.
"They (tourists) often ask us to recom-
Mend things to see and places to stay,"
Lamb said, who added that bed and
breakfast places were becoming quite
popular.
"They seem to like the town's upkeep
and are impressed by all the events we
have going on."
However, Lamb did pote many tourists
saying the had prob1e1P1iA driving. on The
Square. " ro "'. "
"Many have problems getting off The
Square. Every way they go, they end up
back on The Square."
Figures on visitors to the booth twill be
made available in October.
