The Association identified the need for volunteer training and developed this leadership workshop entitled "The Challenge of Running ' Your Non -Profit Organization." The workshop is aimed at members in volunteer oYganizations ranging from sports organizations to arts groups and service clubs to fraternities in the Counties of Huron, Perth, Grey, Bruce and North Wellington. The workshop received a very positive response from participants at .last September's conference hosted in Walker- ton and this year's committee hopes for the same results with a top notch list of profes- sional resource people. MPP Murray Elston, Minister of Health c cart rae I wrote a tongue-in-cheek column last week inviting drivers to race around the Square. It has come to my attention that some drivers may indeed show up. It was never my intention to endanger the lives of Goderich citizens nor to encite a riot. I was mearly trying to be funny and write a humorous column. I never believed that anyone would take ;ne seriously. No one has in the past. I had originally planned to write an in- credibly witty, truely insightful clournn this week, but public service and saving the lives of thousands comes first, so I will hold it for the future. Instead, I will make a few moderatly intelligent convents about current sporting events. Congratulations to the fastest man in the world, Canadian Ben Johnson, who won the 100 metre dash at the World Campion - ships in Rome on Sunday. Johnson will now go down in history as Canada's greatest track and field athlete. Few will shed a tear for Johnson's defeat of the ar- rogant American, Carl Lewis. Johnson set a world record of 9.83. A record he feels may stand for 50 years unless he beats it. I now know why Lewis was so confident that he could beat Johnson. Lewis equalled the old world record time of 9.93 in finishing second. Lewis had obviously run that fast in practice and felt, however foolishly, that he would win. Canada Cup Canada has not played too well in this year's Canada Cup. I know that these games are just preliminary round play and that Canada will make the playoffs. However, not wanting to sound like Howie Meeker, someone should tell the Canadian team that hockey is a full contact game. I watched the 4-4 tie .with Czechoslovakia 'and did not see one good hit. In fact, there were four or five Finnish players who con- stantly skated with the puck with (heir heads down in a 4-1 loss to Canada. It is a shame Wendel Clark was cut_ or there would have been more Finns looking for Wendel, rather than admiring their stick handling. How about those Swedes. Sweden made the Soviet national team look very or- dinary in a 5-3 win. Theyhave a.very good and suprisingly disciplined hockey team. Before I got out of the predicting business, I was going to write a column saying that Sweden, rather than the Soviets was the team Canada had to beat in the Canada Cup. Honest. Girls Softball I took in some of the action at the Squirt Girls Softball Playoff Tounament in Dungannon on the weekend. I was im- pressed with the Dungannon girls .as they capped an undefeated season by winning the. tournament .18-4 over Goderich Township in the finals. They could hit, field, catch and throw better than,, any team in the tourney. They .also appeared to be well coached, as they never seemed to be running around not knowing what to do. Congratulations girls. The story and pictures are on the front page of sports. Spoonerisms: pledge sheets for the upcom- ing Terry Fox Run, September 13, are available at all Becker's stores, Mac's Milk, Simmon's Variety, R and D Variety, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Goderich Signal -Star. The Labour"Day Fastball Tournament is set to go on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday Sept. 4-7 at the hardball diamond, the softball diamond and at GDCI. Admis- sion is $2 for adults per day and children under 12 get in free. A weekend pass is $5. There will be dancing nightly at Goderich Memorial Arena. The top four Goderich fastball teams–Hayters, French, Orioles and Goderich Tire–will compete in the 'B' division. Twenty-eight teams from all over Ontario will join the Goderich entries. Last year Gary Muxlow batted .412 to lead Denommes to the title, edging Sherwood 3-2 in the final. Mosquitos lose The Goderich-Mosquito soccer team lost 3-0 to a powerful, well-balanced Exeter, team at a tournament in St. Columban last Saturday. Forwards Jason Meriam and Drew Mc- Caulay scored for Goderich as they beat Bryansto0-1 in their opening game. Exeter trio Isabel Rodgerson and her partners, Loretta Siegnor and Bea Ballantine all of Exeter won Ladies's Trebles Tournament hosted by the Goderich Lawn Bowling Club August 26. About 50 bowlers from Exeter, Mitchell, Atwood, Clinton, Wingham and Seaforth competed with Helen Haynes, Mary Hig- gins and Betty Dow of Mitchell finishing second. Olive Papple, Carol Carter and Grace Broadfoot of Seaforth took third. There was a tie for fourth place between Lois Haynes, Audrey Walsh and Jean Gray of Clinton and the Goderich team of Grace Mugford, Mabel Young and Marjorie Sturdy. The Atwood team of Lillian Horne, Thelma Kidd and Della Slavin were the consolation prize winners. Despite drizzling rain, play began at 10:30 a.m. and three games were com- pleted. Competitors enjoyed a pot luck lunch.
