There, stretching from the window to the centre of the building, was a web, probably a spider's, which would have caught me right across the face. Just think of the fun the spiders could have with my hair. – Well, 1 whipped out my right hand and touched that web at its lowest spot in the centre of the that garage. The window was on my left and the web was attached in two places, high and low on that window. The broken web drifted up and over, catching the left side of the web. Another piece just floated. I stood there. How did that loose end know where to go and such a distance, five feet or omore. I watched another loose end, wondering what it would"do. (Oh, I had nothing else to do but stand still and watch spider webs. I just wanted the ladder ... my eavestroughs were growing flowers. ) I seemed to be rooted to the spot. My eyes attached to that loose end of webbing. Luckily no spiders were in sight or he or she would have been after me. j, The web floated on the air current from the open dor behind me. What was that loose end going to do. For another two minutes, perhaps more, I watched. Sure enough it fluttered up then down, then up catching a loose end I hadn't seen before. The spider sent it out. Once again the web was whole and • I was flabbergasted. About 40 years or more ago the Everglades of Florida had quite a variety of animals in that swampy forest. Alligators ROUND 9 N With Martha Rathburra • slithered around, bear .and panthers, deer and other wild life was plentiful. Over the years, the hunters upgraded their mode of travel for that area and one of the first "Swamp buggies" made its appearance. A model T Ford, equipped with bomber tires and cleated chains made good head- way against that wet forest. Later buggies were mounted on huge air- craft or tractor wheels, better motors and drive assemblies, powerful enough to push through that impossible terrain. On the edge of the forest near Naplea, a figure eight track winds through the treacherous cypress swamps with hidden potholes where the smaller buggies might disappear. Changes from the old to new were in the machines only as the sportsmanship and friendship remained high. The unusuall race was run over a deliberately destroyed track that was flooded eight feet in mud. In later years, especially built frames and more powerful engines enabled them to faster take -offs and they would drown out or even run over the other fellow and overturn hen you de fiver your White Bean Crop 0 Ken R. A huge tractor would winch them out. One year as we watched, one machine hit a hole and dear knows what happened, but the front end rose up in the air, swayed and tipped over backwards, his big _back wheels still spinning in the suud. A nearby sheritt drove into the muck for the driver. Luckily the young man had managed to release his safety belt and was unhurt. One other time, a sheriff had to release the belt or the driver would have drowned. Every race was a thriller with four to six starters and one or two finishers. In nearly every race, at least one racer had to be dragged out. The "buggies" were all shapes and sizes, some with queer wheels, like wire buggy wheels, others were very wide with huge inflated tires. What a sight. Some had a big boat on high wheels while others wre just frames with the driver perched high and dry ... at least we thought he was until we saw him struggling toe keep his face above the muck. One fellow got mired in the first hole he hit. He was touted as a sure winner and was he ever mad. He refused help but finally wriggled out but konked out at the next hole. Most were fun to watch and all were thrillers but many were towed out. Well, I could go on and on with swamp buggy stories; they were real thrillers. I hope you can visualize some of the excitement. Love you, Martha Utilities to celebrate 75 years of power It's been 75 years since Ontario's municipal electric utilities organized themselves to fight on behalf of public power. To commemorate the occasion, the Municipal Electric Association (MEA) will officially rededicate the newly refur- bished EWB Snider monument on Monday, September 14, 1987, 3 p.m. in St. Jacobs, Ontario. Headlining the event are Ralph Nicol, MEA Chairman, Tom Campbell, Ontario Hydro Chairman and Herb Epp, MPP, Waterloo North. Originally built in 1956, the monument pays tribute to EWB Snider's frontier ef- forts, along side those of Sir Adam Beck and U.B. Detweiler, in bringing public ownership of electricity to the citizens of Ontario. The refurbishment project was initiated by the MEA as part of the 75th an- niversary celebrations. A leading Canadian industrialist during the late 1880's, EWB Snider dreamed of the . day when homes and factories would be supplied with electricity from a single generating source at a cost far less than the birth of the public power movement. In 1912, the province's electric utilities joined forces to ensure that a reliable, cost- effective electrical distribution system would be provided to the citizens of Ontario. THe Municipal Electric Association is the voice for more than 310 municipal elec- tric utilities throughout Ontario to govern- ment, Ontario Hydro and others in the in- dustry. Its members operate a specialized municipal service and represent more than 2.3 million residential, commercial and industrial customers who consume more than two-thirds of the electric power in Ontario with a total hydro bill that exceeds $3 billion each year. Keeping abreast of all the business .from page 1 My sister picked the receiver off the floor. "I don't know why you're coming unravelled like this" she said, like my mother regularly has her bosom bolstered. "It's a simple operation ... Dr. Robert says she's fit and strong and the hip area allows easy access ..." "The hip?" I blurted. "She's going to have one breast implanted on her hip? Gail - I know we all admire her sense of humour but this ... this is crazy ..." "She's having a hip implant, you dolt! A hip implant! You never listen do you?" Blood returned to my Ashen face, ox- ygen to my brain. "No ..." I said faintly ... I closed my eyes and saw Jayne Mansfield, Loni Anderson and Dolly Parton ... all six of them ... all with matching heads. "Why don't you come over for dinner" asked Gail, recovering, "we'll show you exactly how it's going to be done." "You got pictures?" I asked, knowing never to be surprised. "X-rays ... we'll throw'em up on the kitchen wall .. you know the hip bone's connected to the leg bone." Great. A new dimension - music. A family story in song, starring my mother's ex -hip. I'll start listening better Marg I pro- mise. Best of luck. We're all puling for you.
