More students f und jo I s
through placement centre
If figures from the Canada Employment
Centre for Students can be used as a
barometer, then its obarui6us more and
more employers are rn 'rig use of both
the centre and student labour.
Registrations at the student employ-
ment centre increased substantially this
year as did the number of placements.
• Centre supervisor, Janice Dunbar, said
that 1,346 students registered with the cen-
tre this summer, an increase of 11 per cent
over the 1986 figure of 1,210 registrations.
Special requests, mostly from
homeowners requiring a single student for
a specific project, were up 17 per cent with
1,149 placements compared to 979 last
year.
Not surprisingly, agriculture -related
jobs such as haying, berry picking and
general farm labour, account for 60 per
cent of the centre's placements. Many of
those jobs, especially haying in the heat,
are difficult to fill. Surprising4y,
householders were the second largest
employer this summer.
"Private households were the second
largest employer this summer," Dunbar
explained. "People had students doing
everything -from painting, cleaning and
babysitting to washing windows."
Many of those orders are filled on a
casual basis, but for young students, it pro-
vided work and a source of income, though
on an irregular basis. The majority of
students placed through the centre were of
high school age while a Grade 3 registrant
was unable to find employment.
Dunbar began work in .Jar rv, organiz-
GARB & GEAR'S
ing the centre's operation and making
employers aware of the services.available.
She said a high profile helped increase the
number of placements this year.
"I started work w January and over 300
letters weresent out to employers. We also
had responsibility for the Exeter office,"
she said. "The promotion of the centre
seemed to work and we had a lot of feed-
back from people who had seen our ads or
articles."
The student employment was closed as
of Friday of last week, but the Canada
Employment Centre on East Street will
handle any requests. Dunbar has followed
up on the summer employment program
and learned that students are willing, co-
operative workers.
This was the first year that we followed
up placements with calls to the employers
and the response has just been excellent,"
she said. "We got positive feedback and
most said they would use us again. They
had good experiences with students."
Many students find their own employ-
ment in the retail, service and tourist sec-
tors but Dunbar hopes that retailers would
make better use of the student employ-
ment centre in future.
Huron County was served by two main
student placement centres in Goderich and
Exeter while placement centres were
operated in Clinton and Seaforth on a one -
day -a -week basis. Besides Dunbar, the of-
fices were staffed by placement officers
Dave MacDonald, Lynne Dodds, Sandra
Datars and Janice Robinson.
