Children are interested in all this - but most of us don't realize it. Children, now, have become very smart while they are still very little. They know their ABCs and many other things. Television has been teaching for many years- all the grownups have to do is "h them right from wrong, obedience and our traditions or heritage. There must be another name for obedience because I haven't. heard anyone use that word in a long time. "Right from wrong" takes care.of it, perhaps, obedience and truth, many years back, were big words too. 1 feel the very young people are influenced, much too soon, by television. We don't realize; how soon kis take notice of this inodern teacher. Television won't admit it taught your young one to scream until he got his way, to swear and throw things and believe the things they see and hear are right -but the kids saw it on TV. I think TV is one of the world's great in- ventions. I used to watch it everytime I had a chance. Would you like a kit on mak- ing pottery, for your Grade 6 class? Or perhaps you need a story teller for your library. These are some of the many areas of in- terest that the new Huron -Perth Arts Coun- • 61 has under its mandate, which is the pro- motion and development of the arts in the Huron -Perth area. The Council grew out of a group called the Four County Arts Committee which ran a seminar on fund-raising for small arts organizations in the south-western Ontario region in 1985. The need for an ongoing organization to keep artists, educators, con- servors and arts administrators in touch with each other became very apparent. Out of this concern grew the idea for an area arts council which would not only promote arts awareness in Huron -Perth but also keep people in touch through a regular newsletter. The Huron -Perth Arts Council was formed in mid -1986 and plans were immediately made to start a long-range programme to rejuvenate and make available a large number of educational kits from Gallery Stratford for use in Huron -Perth schools. The new Board of Directors also started a membership campaign and by fall '86 had sent out its first newsletter to the member- ship. The focus of the Council's activities presently centres around building member- ship in the organization, acquiring office space,' and preparing the kits for use by schools, libraries and interested organiza- tions next fall. The kits' topics range from sculpture, architecture, posters and famous artists to a variety of ones ,on Canadian heritage and other cultures. Through its networking between artists and the community, the Arts Council will also be able to make arrangements for ar- tists and speakers to visit schools and ad- dress organizations in the area. News of various upcoming events in Huron -Perth is published in the Council's newsletter and organizations are encouraged to let the Council know of exhibits and events that would be of interest to the membership and commlihity. New members are very welcome to join the Arts Council and can receive informa- tion by phoning Karen Scott -Booth at the Gallery Stratford at 271-5271, or Lynda Lentz at the Blyth Festival 523-4345. tatl1rs ROUND 'N ABOUT ., .,-, Ma:w rr.... c,,. n,n. ,.,E, .nm,r'7n'wxa•mom°?:L'mtxl.L'ur':xy,+'E With Martha Ii®thburn and hear now. Many times lately, I have been angry and disgusted with many pro- grams but, what can you do about it outside of turning it off or to another station that isn't quite as bad. I know that many young parents are just as angry about the programs lately. I say lately because some young parents would not put up with it. Television was turned off and the little ones played in the yard -yours one day, but if you had• to go shopping another mother would take your little one. If a young one was going to school, he or she would come to your house until mother was back -this didn't happen too. often but on one street they were looking outfor the youngsters -no-one wasjeft alone. This great idea gave mothers a couple or three hours to shop, get a hairdo or whatever, and know herlittle ones were in good hands. None of them could really afford to put them in a nursery or school when the children were so young. They looked out for each other and I thought it was a wonderful idea. One rule - no -one took advantage of a friend, they made sure -they were more like sisters and brothers -people who really helped each other. People need people. THE HAPPY NOTES HOTLINE 524-2614 Don't keep your GOOD NEWS n secret... tl It was obvious they were building a family heritage or a community heritage as there were many families on that street. "Our part is terribly important," my grand- daughter said. She has lived on this street for six or seven years now. "We need each other, if the girl across the stree is real busy you check with another, there is enough of, us now.""I have a sneaky idea she may have started all this, she loves children. Heritage and traditions are wonderful things that we try to teach our children. We share -the children share also and think nothing of it. From heritage and traditions we teach them affection and that, our parents and grandparents taught us. We also share these nice older parents. We talk to the children about them so when they see them they are friends. This is important. In our energy saving the children are not only saving precious things like "time" but possessions and older people they soon learn to love. Everyone tries to keep happy. We can see the new awareness of the past and the future. Let's just hope it increases and flows smoothly into that stream marked heritage. So, heritage is not just an—old building, there's more to it -there's friendship and love. So, I've wandered again. No, not out in the country but here in town. I've gone to the end of the new streets and admired the fine 'houses. The town is just bustin' its buttons. There have been a lot of shoppers, the beaches are real busy. Houses are being bought and sold and there is still a lot of building being done. So take care of yourself, call your friends, Love Martha GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1987—PAGE 13A A4 ?G? When lime Need The Best! For the best in complete Hair Care call...
