Tie gives French final
Labour tourney spot
French locked -up the final Goderich In-
dustrial Fastball League Tournament spot
with a 6-1 win over Hayters and a 3-3 tie
against Goderich Tire.
French scored all the runs they would
need against Hayters with two in the first
inning as Don Willis doubled home Jim
Martin and Bob Johnston, Monday. Don
Bogie pitched superbly, scattering six hits
and allowing a final inning run. Willis had
a good night at the plate, going three for
four. John O'Keefe had a sacrifice fly to
score Myles Murdock for the lone Hayters'
run.
On Tuesday French took a 3-0 lead over
Goderich Tire and gave Sherwood a little
hope. French allowed Goderich Tire to
come back but escaped with a 3-3 tie to;ad-
vance. French scored all their runs when
Bob Johnston homered with two men on. It
was his third of the year and ties him with
Brian Moody for the league lead. Goderich
Tire pitcher, John Bogie settled down after
that and allowed only six hits the final
eight innings. French's Don Bogie was
coasting along until the bottom of. the
seventh when GT scored three runs to send
the game into extra -innings. Former
league batting leader, Dave Gallow had a
two -RBI double. Jeff Cox knocked in the
other run. GT threatened in the eigth with
runners at second and third and again in
the ninth with the bases loaded but both
times Don Bogie worked -out of trouble.
Sherwood beat Hayters 3-0 Wednesday,
allowing Orioles to take second place.
Pete Bakker led off the first with a homer
to give Sherwood the early lead. In the
third, Hill Tigert had a two -run single to
add .some insurance. Sherwood pitcher,
John Peet allowed only three hits, two of
them to Andy Moore.

Legion Peewees drop best
of three playoff series
The Goderich Legion Peewee Fastball
team lost their best of three WOBA playoff
series 2-1 against St. Mary's. Home feild
was an advantage in three one -run ball
games as St. Mary's won the first game at
home 4-3, Goderich tied the series in
Goderich with a 8-7 win but lost on the road
12-11 in the deciding game.
St. Mary's 12, Goderich 11
St. Mary's was looking to put the final
game away early as they scored 11 runs it
the first three innings and built an 11-3
lead. However, Goderich pitcher Todd
Papple settled down and allowed only one
more run and gave his team a chance to
come back. He fanned 10 batters in the
game.
Walks to Trevor Bazinett, Sam Hosack,
Andrew McLarty, Ken McLarty and
singles by Paul Wheeler, Andrew Scott,
and Chad Papple and a double by Jason
Volland scored seven runs for Goderich in
the fourth. John Wain walked in the fifth,
Sam Hosack doubled him over to third and
Andrew Scott's single scored him to tie the
game at 11. A walk, a hit and a ground out
scored the winning run in the fifth for St.
Mary's.
Goderich 8, St. Mary's 7
Goderich scored four runs in the first 'in°-
ning without getting a hit. Todd Papple,
Jason Volland, Chad Papple and Sam
Hosack all walked. Throw in two wild pit-
ches and an error and Goderich was up 4-2.
The teams traded runs in the third, St.
Mar 's added three in the fifth and one in
the sixth to take the lead 7-4. However,
they let Goderich back in the game.
Goderich scored two runs in their half of
the sixth on two walks, a wild pitch and an

on an error to end the game.

scored one of their own in the third, added
two more in the fifth and put the game
away with a run in the sixth.
Watch out
for that car
Tables play for
pairs qualifying
On Tuesday at the Goderich Duplicate
Bridge Club six tables of bridge players
played in qualifying for the North
American Life Master Pairs competition.
A Howell movement was played.
Aelian Weerasooriya and P.K.
Venkiteswaran finished first with 82
points. Bernice and Bob Miller took se-
cond with 74 points, Eleanor Erskine and
Mary Donelly were third with 73.5, Mary
Wilkinson and Jeanne Scotchmer were '
fourth with 69.5 and Shirley Wood teamed
with Jane Cere to score 67.5 points and
finish fifth.
Living on the Square above one of this
town's finer business establishments, I
have become the unofficial, official scorer
for a highly -popular, little -publicized,
blood sport called Hell Drivers of The
Square.
Competition is open to anyone who owns
or drives a car and has co-ordination
enough to be able to breath and blink at the
same time. Racing starts at 11:30 p.m.
and goes until sunrise. The object of the
game–I think–is to drive a loud, large car
around the Square as fast as possible with
the stereo cranked to deafening levels,
drawing the ire of sane, sleepy individuals
while at the same time, eliciting giggles
and awe-struck. stares from young women
in Beaver Canoe sweat -shirts. There is an
added element that makes this sport even
more exciting– it is against the law.
As Official scorer, I have developed a
bonus point system to separate the true
Hell Driver from those who are merely
drunk, stupid, reckless or all of the above.
Squealing Tires.
Five points will be awarded for squeal-
ing tires with an additional point for each
second the squeal lasts over five seconds.
A distinct odour of burnt rubber earns an
extra three points. If the car is new and
the tires in good shape, I give five more
points for degree .of difficulty and five
more points if the high-speed turn is
negotiated with the driver holding a half -
empty bottle of Crystal (a beer is never
half -full). I give no points to anyone who
comes close to parked cars, rather I award
three points for staying as close as possible
to the middle ( I park my car on the
Square) .
Loud Stereo
Stereo systems that produce the same
noise levels as a 747 taking off are worth
five points. However, to increase point
' total the Hell Driver must pay particular
attention to his choice of music. Loud, ob-
noxious heavy-metal bands are a must. If
I can clearly hear the words to an AC -DC
song from the back of . my apartment, I
award five points. If I awake in the middle
of the night from nightmares containing
leather -clad females and Satanic images, I
give them ten points and a rude hand
gesture. Playing Barbara Streisand songs
at an extreme volume, earns 15 points
from my wife.
Flashy Cars
This is the catagory wh re Hell Drives
can really rack up the p.. as s. Simply driv-
ing like a rabid anima's in a manure -
spattered Ford pick-up does not cut it here-
-you must be crazy enough to risk destroy-
ing an expensive vehicle. I award one
point for every young woman who looks at,
points at, giggles at or swoons over a Hell
Driver's car or driving disability. Women
under the age of 16 don't count -and those
over 25 should know better. Women wear-
ing Beaver Canoe sweat -shirts net an ex-
tra point. They are obviously cool and get-
ting them to swoon is areal feat.
The Winneris
Anyone who scores more than 80 points
is a true Hell Driver of the Square. More
than 100 points earns a special golden.
staight-jacket award. A driver who scores
more than 150 points should consider
becoming a fighter pilot. However, I have
been unable to determine a clear winner.
Orie driver in particular, who drives a
black 1974 Camaro, is leading on my score -
sheet but many others are equally insane.
To declare a winner I would ask all
potential Hell Drivers to meet at the
Square Saturday September, 12 at 11:30
p.m. for the official goof-off. I will ask the
St. John's Ambulance to be in attendence
and local police officials not to be there.
Gentlemen rev your engines, crank -up
the tunes and grab a beer eh.
While the Goderich Police Hell Drivers,
who performed at Agricultural Park Mon-
day night, were entertaining, there is
nothing to compare with the sights and
sounds of the Square on a Saturday night
Squirt girls
beat Goderich
The Dungannon Squirt girls softball
team defeated the Goderich girls number
two team 17-6 last Monday and capped an
undefeated season in inter -township play.
Strong pitching by Jodi Webster,Tricia
Brown and Dana Park held the Goderich
score down.
Debbie Nivins, Doreen Debold, Jodi
Riley, Barb Nivins, Brenda Nivins and
Danielle Mc Clinchey all contributed in a
fine team effort.
The Squirt Girls Softball Tournament
will be held in Dungannon Friday night
and Saturday Aug. 28-29 and all are
welcome to watch and support the girls.
PeeWees tie
The Goderich Peewee soccer team tied
Grand Bend 3-3 at Grand Bend last Mon-
day on the strength of two Marc Melick
goals.
On the same night the Mosquitos lost 3-0
at Exeter and the Atoms dropped a 7-3
decision at home against Exeter on
Saturday.
Mike Glazier scored the other Peewee
goal and centre -forward, Steven Linklater
scored all three goals for the Atoms in
their loss.
