To reduce smoking,Hydro offices go smoke ire
CLINTON - The local Ontario Hydro of-
fices here have a new claim to boast they've
gone .smoke free.
In an effort to reduce smoking in the work
place, the offices of the local hydro centre
now have enforced strict policies which pro-
hibit employees from smoking on the
premises. As well, efforts are now being
made to have all company vehicles
designated as "Smoke Free".
The hydro office in Clinton is one of the
first in the province to initiate a no smoking
policy.
In recognition of this achievement, the
Huron -Perth Lung Association recently
awarded the Clean Air Award to Lionel
LeBrun, manager of Ontario Hydro - Clinton
Area.
Salim Remtulla, president of the Lung
Association made the presentation. He said
that the Lung Association is active in pro-
moting a smoke-free environment in the
workplace and the special award is given to
honor and congratulate employers who have
taken action in this regard.
Employees who .do smoke have been en-
couraged to attend the Countdown courses
which are run by the local Lung Association,
and to recognize that smoking is not qtly
harmful to themselves but to those arm*
them.
Mr. LeBrun noted that special mention
must go to Ontario Hydro employees who
are willingly abiding by the No Smoking
f
adult
admission
to the
rule. He made particular mention of Larry
Jones of Clinton who has given up smoking
as a result of the new program.
As part of Ontario Hydro's effort to create
a smoke free working environment, a
special policy has been developed to address
the matter.

The' Canine Unit is one of the many
specialized Police Units at District Six
Headquarters in Mount Forest.
• The function of this unit is to be opera-
tional in providing a Search and Rescue
service to the Force and other agencies
through the expertise of an especially
trained canine tracking dog.
Mount Forest has recently acquired a
new replacement police dog. The dog,
"Flash", a year -and -half old German
Shepherd, and handler Constable Glenn
O'Rourke, recently completed a fourteen -
week Canine Orientation Course at the
Provincial Police Academy in Brampton.
During the course, "Flash" was trained on
obedience work, tracking lost or missing
persons, tracking criminals and attack ap-
prehension. In the near future, "Flash"
will also be trained in the detection of illicit
drugs.
Before becoming a police dog, "Flash"
was a family pet from the Peterborough
area.
"Flash" will be replacing Constable
O'Rourke's previous canine partner
"Trapper". -
"Trapper", who has been working with
Constable O'Rourke for the past eight
-years, will be retired and become Con-
stable O'Rourke's pet when "Flash" com-
pletes the Drug Detection Training
Course.
Assistive
devices
program
expanded
"The Ontario March of Dimes is delighted
by the Ontario government's announcement
to expand the assistive devices program,"
said David Logan, President of the Ontario
March of Dimes.
The Ontario March of Dimes, together
with allied consumer groups and agencies,
has been asking successive Ontario govern-
ments to expand the assistive devices pro-
gram to adults with disabilities.
Many adults with physical disabilities
now face critical delays in obtaining such
essential equipment as wheelchairs and
braces. Those without sufficient funds to
pay for these devices, must rely on charity
or try to penetrate the labryinth of different
government programs. Disabled youths up
to 23 are now provided with 75 percent of the
funding for these devices by the Ontario
Ministry of Health.
"The announcement came during an On-
tario March of Dimes board meeting
precisely at the point at which we were
discussing the stresses on our tight assistive
devices program budget."
"The Ontario March of Dimes has been
delighted as well by the attention given dur-
ing this campaign by all three party leaders
on issues affecting people with disabilities,
their
their families and friends," David Logan
said.
"We have circulated a questionnaire to
party, leaders on these issues and have
received comprehensive answers."
Questionnaires have also been circulated
to all candidates in nearly every riding in
Ontario and are now being collected and
tabulated.
Before the first advance poll on
September 3, the Ontario March of Dimes
will be holding a news'conference to release
the leaders' answers to these questions and
to elaborate on Ontario Mardi of Dimes
reaction to, them.
