HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-08-26, Page 5Jack MacKinnon of the Huron County Health Unit posts a warning sign at St. Christopher's
Beach Friday. Because of high bacteria levels, swimming is not recommened. Signs were
posted at the Main Beach, St. Christopher's Beach, South Beach and at Port Albert. Water
tests taken last week show a decrease in bacteria levels and all signs have been removed,
except at the Main Beach and Port Albert. More tests were taken Monday and results
should be known soon. According to Ed Harrison of the unit, tests taken August 17 showed an
E. Coli bacteria reading of 600 for South Beach and 6500 for the main beach, A reading of 100
is considered acceptable. E. Coll is found innthe stomachs of warm-blooded animals and is
associated with sewage. It is a good indicator of bacteria levels. The Health unit tests every
Monday. They do not close the beach but recommend against swimming. (photo by Ted
Fire emergency number
is changed to 524-8333
Dear editor,
Effective November 1, 1987 the Emergen-
cy number for the Goderich Fire Depart-
ment will be changed to 524-8333 (the pre-
sent emergencynumber for. police). This
;,as been agreed upon by the Goderich Fire
Department, Fire Committee and the Board
of Commissioners of .Police. The existing
emergency number for the Fire Depart-
ment will continue in service for six months
following the change on November lst.
The combining of both Fire and Police
Emergencies to one telephone number (8
triple 3) will prove easier for citizens who
require either department inany
emergency .
The latest edition of the Signal -Star
Telephone Directory - now being delivered -
shows the new Fire Emergency number.
Although the change is not yet effective; the.
public using the 524-8333 will still reach the
same dispatcher. Any fire emergency call
will receive the same attention by the same
dispatcher at the police station. The
Telephone Directory distribution date and
the effective date of the change. are dif-
ferent. However, the end result of a call will
be the same.
Yours truly,
Patrick D. King

FAC.S.better off without
county involvernent •
Dear Editor,
It is with interest that I note the battle bet-
ween the County of Huron and Family and
Children's Services goes on. Now that the
County does not control the finances of this
agency, it would appear that they intend on
"harrassing" them the only way they can.
This attempt to disrupt is simply a shallow
display in trying to control all monies and
personnel associated with Huron County.
There has never been a. real concern over
the financial management of this agency.
Perhaps if but a few of County Council
members had attended the demonstration
at the Legion, regarding those in this County
who have difficulty with mobility, they
would have better ways to spend their time
and energy. Their lack of interest in' the
mobility concerns is appalling.
Having worked for Family and Children's
Services, I have found that the agency
operated better without the direct involve-
ment of the County. I suggest to the Council
that they leave the agency to the elected
"Board of Directors".
Yours truly,
Stewart E. Thomson

LETTERS
Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of
revisiting your beautiful town. My visit was
not as long as I had hoped it would be. I am
writing this letter to your paper, in hopes
that someone will be able to help me ac-
complish one of the things I had planned to
do while in Goderich.
My first visit to Goderich was nine years
ago. At that time, a picture of a relative was
on display in your .pioneer museum. Her
name was Amanda Maedel Sillib. Her
brother, Charles Maedel, was my great
grandfather.
I had planned to ask some of your senior
residents if they knew of my family. The
Maedel family resided in Carlow and Ben -
miller. Amanda Maedel Sillib's other
brothers were Alexander, Paul Jr., Her-
man, and Emmanuel. Her parents were
Paul and Melinda Maedel, and' her grand-
parents were Godfred and Williemina
Maedel.
If anyone has any information concerning
this family, would you kindly write to me. I
am tracing my family roots and would ap-
preciate any information about the past or
present generation of the Maedel family.
Thank you,
Mrs. Reita Dufour,

Dunlop Decoration Day
Dear editor,
Through the kindness of Mrs: P.
Beauchemin we received a copy of Pat Raf-
tis' account of his ascent to the Dunlop
graves. In my earlier letter I suggested that
pointer signs be placed pointing the way. It
would be of great help if a path could be ar-
ranged along the top of the escarpment.
Until that happens apart from Dunlop
festivals and such like, I suggest a Dunlop
Decoration Day. Then the old Ontario
custom of placing flowers, wreaths and
flags on the graves of the Dunlops could be
observed and those who succeed could be
given a sip of Dr. Wm. Dunlop's favourite
drink.
But my point in writing again is to say that
we enjoyed our stay in Goderich. Incidental-
ly, the Dunlop's chose their grave sight
because from that point there is an ex-
cellent view of the Maitland River and Vis-
count Goderich's Harbour. In the days of
sailing craft it must have been even more
impressive. We would like to get back to
Goderich. On our first trip we were primari-
ly interested in the Lake Huron shore and
spent time exploring the area from Sarnia to
Kincardine and inland villages. On our next
visit we would like to pay more attention to
Goderich. It is such a hospitable and attrac-
tive town.
We are indebted to the Beauchemins who
took such good care of us and were a great
help in their knowledge of the area. We were
fortunate in having such a good host and
hostess.
' Yours sincerely,
Walter Jackson

ing any mention of the Queen with the
ridiculous argument that immigrants' hav-
ing difficulty with English or French may
prefer a shorter oath. Come on, Mr. Crom-
bie - which is more difficult to understand,
"being faithful" to the most widely -known
and loved woman in the world, or promising
to "abide by" a constitution, a piece of
paper most have never read? People matter
most; that is what Monarchy reminds us.
For such an insulting proposal to come
from a Conservative Cabinet Minister in the
35th year of the Queen's reign, and of her
unswerving service to Canada, can only
disturb the average loyal citizen, who wants
immigrants to share his proud loyalties, not
reject them. I urge readers to write to their
MP, to Mr. Crombie and to the Prime
Minister expressing opposition to these sug-
gestions. A detailed brief containing
arguments against any change in the Oath
and suggestions for further individual ac-
tion may be obtained free of charge by

Dear Editor:
Immigrants coming to Canada should be
educated in our form of government, and
thus proud to swear allegiance to Her Ma-
jesty the Queen. However, apparently
Secretary of State David Crombie does not
agree. In a recently released discussion
paper ironically entitled Proud to be Cana-
dian, Mr. Crombie suggests downgrading or
eliminating the Queen from the citizenship
oath. I am writing to alert your readers to
this insulting and untimely proposal, and to
ask them to join in making certain that it
does not become law.
Canada is a constitutional monarchy.
That principle is entrenched in our recently
proclaimed constitution, and the presence
this year in Quebec of both the Queen and
the Queen Mother shows how uncontrover-
sial and widely accepted is the role of the
Crown. Recognition of this fact should be
made by anyone who wants to become a
Canadian.
One of the discussion paper's proposed
Oaths places the Queen in fourth place, and
eliminates the promise "to bear true
allegiance" to the Sovereign. This is
justified as follows: "Some believe the coun-
try itself ought to take precedence over the
Crown", falsely suggesting that there is a
conflict. Our way of expressing love of coun-
try is through loyalty to the Crown, because
