MacDonald had been in constant contact with Coast Guard units in Sarnia and Port Huron, Mi. and it wasn't 'until late Satur- day night that he issued the mayday. "They sent a helicopter and a cutter but the seas were too heavy for the cutter to get nearus and they hovered way. out- side," he explained. "The Forest OPP lin- ed us up ori the shore so the helicopter could pinpoint our location. At.2 a.m. they picked us up and dropped us at the base in Ipperwash." A lifelong sailor, MacDonald said there was no reason to panic during the ordeal, 'explaining the only real danger was being washed overboard. "There was no panic. It wasjust a case of hanging on," he said. "I have sailed all my life but have never seen anything like from lake it. Everything just went wrong, and we were helpless." With life rings and belts on board, Mac- Donald said the group was prepared, to float to shore. "We were about a half mile off shore and the sea would have carried us in with no problem," he said. With the aid of Donald Bert MacNam, MacDonald expected to salvage the boat this week, when the weather co-operated. "It's a steel hull so I don't anticipate too much damage." The experience has not dented Mac - Donald's enthusiasm for the water or sailing. "I wasn't really concerned until we lost both the engine and steering. We just went through a number of bad things," he said. MacDonald commended both the Coast Guard units and police for their assistance and quick response.
