Dear Editor:
On behalf of the planning committee for
the Huron County Awareness Day in
Goderich on Thursday, Aug. 6, we wish to
thank the following people who par-
ticipated in our event and for being such
good sports: Kathleen Buckley, MacKay
Centre; Jane Netzke, Goderich Recreation
Director; Dave Overboe, Huron County
Social Services; Carol Wilson, Community
Living Association; Salem Remtulla,
Alexandra General and Marine,
Physiotherapist; Joan Van Den Broeck,
Heart & Stroke Foundation; Mel Bogie,
LETTERS
Lion's Club President; Dorothy Bogie,
Lioness Club President; Lou Anne Hope,
Signal -Star Publishing.
For a very short time these, individuals
experienced an opportunity to view
Goderich from a different perspective —
from that of someone with a disability. The
concerns that arose regarding sidewalks,
curb cuts, traffic lights and heavy doors
are all very legitimate concerns for our
disabled and frail elderly.
Through creating awareness of the
needs of our special populations we in-
stigate change and we can break down the
barriers. If you want to provide access for
thephysically disabled feel free to write or

Local police enforce strict seat belt use
It's a fact: "Seat belts save lives", and the
only way to protect yourself in case of a col-
lision is to be, properly belted up ... adults in
seat belts and children in the appropriate
child restraint system.
It's a fact: "Around the block caii be more
dangerous than freeway driving", as people
take moke local short trips than long
distance ones.
With the above facts in mind and in the in-
terest of public safety, the Huron County
OPP Detachments at Exeter, Goderich, and
Wingham will continue to place emphasis on
both road and marine safety through the
RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving
eerywhere) and Marine Awarenenss
Program.
The Strict is Fair program has proven to
be an effective method of reducing ac-
cidents and death, and patrol officers will be
paying special attention to impaired driv-
ing, excessive speed, seat belt use, and bad
driving habits with RIDE spot checks and
radar units.
It's a fact: The number of fatal motor
vehicle accidents in No. 6 District, Mount
Forest (including Huron County) this year
to July 1987 is 21 fatalities, and of these, 19
persons (none of whom were wearing seat
belts) were ejected from the vehicles involv-
ed resulting in serious or fatal injuries.
These deaths were attributed to excessive
speed and the lack of seat belt use.
It's a fact: Child safety seats reduce
deaths by 90 percent and crippling injuries
by 70 percent. You never know when a crash
might happen or even a sudden stop
therefore, the key is to use these restraints,
but use them properly.
Act revises electoral district boundaries
When you go to vote in the provincial elec-
tion on September 10, you may find your
riding has a new name or completely new
boundaries, as a result of a bill passed by
the Legislature last July. The Representa-
tion Act which revises the boundaries of On-
tario's electoral districts takes effect forthe
first time in this 34th general election.
As well as increasing the number of seats
by five to 130, the bill made changes to most
existing ridings. However, the extent of the
change does vary. Fifty-eight ridings have
only slightly changed while 51 have
undergone more significant shifts. The
changes do not affect you at all if you live in
one of the 16 ridings that have remainded
intact.
If you realize the amount of time and work
that goes into ra redistribution then you
won't be surprised that it only happens
about every eight to 10 years. The last
redistribution occurred in 1975 when the
number of seats jumped from 117 to 125.
Population increases generally dictate the
need for change.
As well, the interests of municipalities,
community groups and individuals are
closely examined. The passage of the bill
was the result of three years of Legislative
review; public hearings and study by all
parties. The Ontario Electoral Boundaries
Commission, which was responsible for the
review, conducted public hearings
throughout the province and received
almost 600 representations.
The commission released its first pro-
posals for change in February 1984 and
public hearings were conducted in April and
May of that year. Hearings were held in
Windsor, London, Kitchener, St. Catharines,
Hamilton, Barrie, Peterborough, Kingston,
Ottawa, Toronto, Sudbury and Thunder
Bay.
A report was submitted to the Legislature
in November of 1984 and Members subse-
quently reviewed the recommendations and
filed their continents. Debate on the propos-
ed changes began in July 1985 and continued
later in the year in October and December.
Debate concluded in January of 1986 and a
final report was issued in March. The bill
was passed on July 10, 1986.
The former Huron -Middlesex riding is one
such riding which has been changed. Voters
in Huron County are now in the Huron
riding.
OFA urges farmers to utilize survey
Brigid Pyke, president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture, urged all
farmers who receive a federal question-
naire on farm debt review to take the time to
fill out the survey.
Pyke said: "To make the debt review
. boards truly effective, we need a realistic
assessment'of tip review process ns ft'exists
* who the major creditors were at the start
of the debt review process.
* which creditors were involved in forming
the agreement
* which creditors remained players after
the deal was made, and
