HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-08-05, Page 22PAGE 10A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, T987 News Regina's wreck threatened Several weeks back, we reported the finding of the Regina's wreck from the great Storm of 1913 by U.S. 'diver Wayne Brusate of Marysville, Mich. One of his concerns was that scavenging divers would start picking the wreck clean of historically valuable artifacts. It now ap- pears these fears may be more real than was appreciated. Directors of museums at Detroit, Port Huron and Port Sanilac, Mich., are sup- porting Brusate in his efforts to have state regulations relaxed to make his salvage of items (hehas salvage rights to the Lake Huron wreck) financially feasi- ble. It isn't clear what the problem is ex- actly, but the directors echo Brusate's fears that plunderers rather than regulateddivers will,. remove artifacts for personal gain. The Americans, in- cidentally, pronounce the Canadian - freighter's name "Re-gee-na". * * * The winner of this year's International Tugboat Race held during the Windsor - Detroit Freedom Festival was the U.S. vessel John Kendall. According to the newsletter Lake Log Chips, she, is a former Detroit fireboat. The Kendall is net-Awned-by-Ferriss a i4Ie Coatrarting of Detroit and is 135 feet long by 29.feet in beam. She was built in 1929, rebuilt in 1978 and boasts 1250 horsepower. * * * "Chips" also reports that the parks director of Michigan's Huron County,. across the lake and a bit north from here., has compiled a list of about 100 wrecks believed to lie in the waters 'off Michigan's "thumb". Apparently there is a new 276 -square -mile underwater preserve - possibly like, pur Fathom Five (formerly Provincial, now National a Park at Tobermorey - offshore from the thumb, which separates Saginaw Bay from Lake Huron. The Michigan Huron County is said to be planning a new museum at Lighthouse Park near Huron City. * * * Shipwatching on the St. Clair River in June 1, I spied upbound one of those weired craft that crop up occasionally. She had the lines of old steam yacht, long, narrow, By Dick With clipper -bowed and fantailed stern. But there the resemblance ended. The hull was a shabby dull black festooned with old tires. Her .only superstructure was a long low cabin extending nearly her full length. Rather than doors and windows, she ap- peared to have wide openings through which her crew of young men in cutoff jeans came and went. She looked like someone's initial efforts at restoring or converting a'unique vessel. Later, I read that the former steam, now Diesel, yacht Sachem passed through on her way via Lake Michigan and the U.S. river system to Cincinatti for restoring by owner Butch Miller. Sachem was built in 1902 at Celt, and during World War I was in the U.S. Navy and was used'. by Thomas Edison to con- duct experiments on the predecessor of Sonar and a "fog bomb". Miller bought her in New Jersey fiTAD101500 in 1984_,-,..,.-- I' hope the next time she passes, Miller will have her looking her old self. Shipwatchers often tend to be great photo collectors, occasionally squander- ing the grocery funds for a rare picture of a favorite ship from the, past. These types will find a little-known treasure trove in the James Collection in Owen Sound. The James Daughters still produce the postcard -sized printsand sell them at their art -framing -photo shop downtown. The collection, some from glass negatives, depicts numerous fine old long -forgotten Canadian ships, most while they were berthed at Owen Sound harbor. Ship columnist Skip Gillham • three years ago was unable to find a photo of the old CSL freighter Saskatchewan to il- lustrate his writings and instead rats an earlier picture 'of her as the Glenlivet. Recently, he found the Saskatchewan in the James Collection, possibly the only publicly available photo of her. Event planned to honor the memory of William O'Neill In the year. 1837, 150 years ago,` William O'Neill penetrated the wilderness in the area known as Ashfield Township as a surveyor. North to Algonquin once again • from page 1 after a ten minute battle of guile and pa- tience brought him to shore where the deft fingers of Calgary Red made sure that one of the biggest fish I've 'ever caught will live to get even bigger. That was the same day Red showed me the western way of bottom fishing when on his first cast his brand new spincast reel hit the bottom of Lake Dickson. I've never seen anybody fish from the floor of the lake, up. It was the same day Red dropped our only roll of toilet paper into the lake. Red is to camping what Delta is to air travel - if you don't like what he's doing wait a minutes because he'll muck up something else. But I love him because he is a Tilleyman and Tilleymen are tough, at least around the house. And I love camping. The thrill of a trip to the John at midnight where ten thou- sand mosquitos wait. The fresh feeling of that early morning dip in the lake amid little bits of food you scraped off last night's dinner dishes. Loons that laugh all night, leeches that put hickees on your ankles, dancing rabbits and bears that breathe blood and all this in the name of recreation. Now next year Red - a fish net for sure and no more pork and beans. Red, the tent can't take it ... marshmellows again ... and more brandy ... yeah a demi-john of brandy ... Local residents take vacation Keith and Karen Rondeau. left on Wednesday to visit family at a nearby cot- tage.
