Employment
for women
More women than ever are entering the
work force. Yet unemployment is greater
than it has been at any time since the
depression. And at the same time, the very
jobs women have traditionally counted on
are undergoing rapid technological change.
What then, are realistic employment, op-
tions for women?
In order to help women select employ-
ment choices that hold some promise for the
future, the YWCA of Metropolitan Toronto
has published a handbook Working in the
1980's: 20 Selected Jobs for Women. Each
job description outlines information about
the nature of the work, training re=
quirements, future prospects, salary, and
advancement opportunities..
According to Jeanne Eddington, YWCA
Working Skills for Women Co-ordinator, the
handbook grew out of experience in the
Working Skills program ,which trains
women to adapt to the impact of technology
on the work force.
-This handbook is written for women who
want better jobs," says Ms. Eddington. "It
will be useful for women needing to re-train,
women considering non-traditional or
computer-related occupations,' women sear-
ching for a new career direction, young
women seeking a career with a future,
women re-entering .the work force. In addi-
tion, it will be very useful for high school
guidance counsellors, employment
counsellors and vocational advisors."
The jobs selected for inclusion in the guide
were chosen because they satisfied some, or
all, of the following criteria: 'a training
period of one, two, or at most, three years;
availability of training at a community col-
lege level; possibility in many cases ofon-
the-job training and pail -time study; good
earning potential; likelihood of being
around for the next 10-20 years; availability,
in some cases, of federal training funds.
Copies of Working in the , 1980's: 20
Selected Jobs For Women are available
from the YWCA, Resource Development
Department, 80 Woodlawn Ave. E., Toronto,
M4T 1C1 (Tel: 961-8100) at a cost of $3.50
plus $1.50 postage and handling.

Fourteen years ago, Frank was involved
in a car accident which left him in a coma.
for two years. In 1974, he came out of the
coma. Although his intellect was not af-

in his limbs, and needs to use a wheelchair
for mobility.
Last year he was able to go to the Ontario
