Flower beds are beautiful
The flower beds around town have been --
are — just beautiful and they are found in
many unexpected, out of the way places.
The Parks Committee deserve a big thank
you for all the work necessary in the upkeep
' of these little, bright spots. Our local ,hor-
ticultural society deserves a big thank -you .
also for -the great hill planting you see on
your way down to the harbour. I'm sure
they have many other bright, spots to thier
credit but no sign boards to brag them up.: -
So, visitors to our Port can easily see the
town is really beautiful.
The huge old tree at the corner of South
and Elgin Streets will be getting lighter in
color now. It has been a,beautiful black but
it is now a very dark green. All too soon it
will be back 'to its spring color . — a soft,
yellow ochre.
1 happened on a write-up I had done in
August 1979 where I had talkdd about our
flowers, our new brick sidewalks. and how
some credit should be given to the Parks
Board with the foresight to get this all
started and the present ones who really take
care of every one of them. I also said I'd like
to see a billboard at the outskirts of town
showing our Square's unique features —
come to think of it we have had it for some
time now, haven't we?
Also I wrote about alittle girl, one of Mary
Lynne Leonards I now Telford) pupils who
enterede. the "Western Ontario Scottish
Dance Competition.” There were not
enough entries for the under eight class so
Kim Fritzley was invited to dance with the
age 10 group. She was the winner in the
• sword dancing, was third in the Sean
Trubhais and received a trophy for the
"most promising dancer" in the competi-
tion. What year was that? Kim is Bill and
Donna Fritzley's daughter. Hi, Kim Mary
Ynne sure raised a lot of great dancers.
I understand, to change the subject, that
"cricket" is becoming quite popular in in
Canada. I can believe it but haven't seen it.
My dad, an English man, was always talk-
ing about the game but couldn't get these
ball players interested. His brother was on
the "Tottenham Hot Spurs" team — at that
time the hottest spur`s in England. I don't
know if that name is familiar today — I don't
keep up with sports news — but back in
1975-76 our recreation director was Mike Dye
mond and he had a list of 20 people who were
interested in playing and was trying to get
things going. I don't recall how he made out
but maybe after 10 years of thinking about it
perhaps someone is interested in the game

That far back I was pushing PORT -- Port
of Goderich. . I liked -the sound of it and
thought we should say it oftener. Well, 1
notice people use the words more often now,
and I'm glad. We need to brag°our port up
more than we do since we are the biggest
and the "bestest" in Lake Huron and we
should let everyone know that any' ship that
can make its way through the St. Lawrence
Seaway can enter our Port of Goderich. It is
wonderful to see so many at, the harbour
when some of these big "takers" come in.
Another thing, isn't is just great to watch the
flotilla of sailboats out beyond the
breakwall. Just watching them sailing out
and returning is a big thrill. Get down there
early — before 10 a.m. Sunday morning and
you will see what. I mean.
1 think we have Tiger Dunlop taken care
of for a few more years but I happened on
this bit of history you might like. He wrote
to his sisters from Fort Gratiot, USA, .June
2, 1827 that he was arden of the Forests of
Canada Company, Office York, UC. 1 don't
recall what the UC signified but he was leav-
ing Fort Gratiot on the American side where
he procurred provisions for the Canadiar.
side. He travelled. 12 miles through the
woods before coming upon "the most
beautiful country in Canada," He planned to
stay at Red River I Maitland) for the sum-
mer. The letter too over two monthsto reach
Scotland. The Red River, spoken of as
"Menesetung" also, had the red water
which came from the swamps beyond
Listowel. It was a very bright red in the spr-
ing. "Maitland" it was named later for the
new Lieutenant Governor. He continues,
"On may route, I found many deserted In-
dian winter settlements. On the banks I saw
no less than 10 deer and the Indians sold us
two haunches for three pints of flour. Food
is not scarce in the country, as for fish, one
man can spear enough fish for 35 men a day.
I shall remain at Red River. Galt is going to
bring me four sailors and a boat and I ex-
pect to spend a very pleasant summer. Also
Dunlop is going home to make ar-
rangements for settling here."
Unless you intend to read Tiger's letters
from start to finish, you had better not shirt.
Yon can get so mixed up with him that you
don't know if he is lost or if you are. Great
.reading, anyway.
Keep well.
Love, Martha
