Trainee, '`iV"alker collects one win
On Thursday, July 16, the Ontario Sires
Stakes two-year-old trotting fillies came to
town. Trainer Robert Walker brought four
fillies to Goderich, and he managed to col-
lect a win and three thirds. The win was
posted by Ruby Skye, one of the most suc-
cessful two-year-old trotting fillies in the
country. Ruby Skye's win on Thursday
boosted her earnings to over $30,000 in 'on-
ly eight starts. Ruby Skye trotted the mile
in 206, a new track record at Goderich for
two-year-old trotting fillies.
The second fastest division of the fillies,
was won by All in the Air in 207'. This
filly's firstin did not come easily as she
won only b a head, edging out Cosmic
Spark driven by Ross Battin. Battin's near
miss with Cosmic Spark precluded his col-
lecting two Sires Stakes wins on Thursday,
as he abley guided Knot a Dream across
the wire in the first division in 211'. Knot a
Dream's win was her third win in three
starts.
Another impressive mile was posted by
local mare Willoway Wendy. It appeared
as if she had finally met her match on
Thursday as she faced Prince of Eternia., a
3 -year-old gelding who won his last start in
Clinton in 205. But Wendy's driver Barry
Graham guided the mare to her third win
in as many starts. Willoway Wendy paced
the mile in 2052 and won by a handy 41/2
lengths over second place finisher Prince
of Eternia.

roared a welcome, describes Park in his
story,
Mayor Moody greeted the team and told
the boys and management how proud, the
town was at what they had accomplished,
That was the official welcome but the
celebrations went on from there far in to
the night.
'Goderich was behind the Flyers but it
was Louzon who saw that the team was
well taken care of. Hayter said the team
was in great shape and it was Louzon who
would drive the players in his truck to
.Stratford for practices to keep, them in
shape.
Edna Doak said the wives and
girlfriends always cooked the team 'hot
meals after a game. Often in the back
room of Louzon's store.
Hayter said goalie Gerry Ginn was a big
part of the team's success as well as, a
Juvenile line they called up just before the
playoffs. That line consisted of twin
brothers, Harold and Donald Warren and
Bill Newcombe. The trio joined the team
when their season ended.
The only sour note concerning the teain
happened on Jan. 7", 1947 and went a long
way towards the demiseof the team. Ac-
cording to arena authorities at the time, a
press of spectators against the the steel
cable along the edge of the balcony
became too great when a fight deveolped
on the ice, during the game: As the cable
snapped,the spectators leaning against the
.cable fell to the ice, some landing on their
heads, Mrs. Frank H. Woods died aand
her brother M. N. McDonald fractured
both wrists and an elbow.
'McDonald sued the team and the town
for damages. The Supreme court dismiss-
ed the case against the town, saying they
were legally rather than morally responsi-
ble. The decision went against the team
'.management who. leased Goderich arena
from the town. Ivan Louzon, Walter
Westbrook, Arnold Doak and Donald Pa-
quette were ordered to pay $4895 in
damages, a great deal of money in 1947.
The suit ended most of the team's en-
thusiasum and two years later the team
was no more.
However a great team is never forgotten
and as Park said in his column "You can
write the name of Goderich fairly boldly on
the hockey map.
The Louzon Flyers consisted of: Don
Warren, Bill Newcombe, Harold Warren,
Ken Doig, Don Ainslie, Jack Stoddard,
George Westlake, Gerald Mero, Jimmy
Hayter, Gerry Ginn, Bruce J, MacDonald,
Bruce D. MacDonald, Bob Allin, Jimmy
Bisset, Anold Doak (manager), Walt
Westbrook (coach), Ed Ervine (trainer),
Gord Powell (mascot) and Ivan Louzon
(sponsor)
The first race was won by Woodrow who
was claimed at Goderich last week. Four
local men claimed the six year old gelding
for $2500, and Woodrow's win in 205' seems
to indicate that the gelding was worth the
money.
The local mare, Miss Taxi broke her
maidenhood by crossing the wire in 210'
with trainer/driver Randy Henry in the
bike. Southern Romeo posted the fastest
mile of the evening as he paced a mile in
205 for owner/trainer/driver Don Windsor.
Logan Skipper collected his second win in
two starts for driver Greg Darnell.
Thursday, July 23 is "Diner's Night" at
Goderich Raceway. Local restaurants
have donated dinners which will be
presented to either the winning driver,
trainer, or owner of the winning horse of
each race. Come on out and join the action
- post time is at 7:30 p.m.

.Peewees hammer Ripley 35-1
The Goderich Peewee Boys Fastball
team hammered Ripley 35-1 on July 17 in a
tune-up for the Peewee -Squirt Fastball
tournament to be held in Goderich July 24
- and 25. •
In other recent games, Goderich
defeated Lucknow by scores oi? 23-19 and
11-3, lost to Wingham 6-4 and defeated
Ripley 18-4.
Goderich plays Lucknow in their first
game of the tournament at 8 p.m. on Fri-
day, July 24 and then plays Tiverton at 10'
a.m., July 25.
GODERICH 18, RIPLEY 4
On July 3, in Goderich, the local
Peewees got off to a six -run first -inning
lead on four hits and four walks. The team
Matthew Brown of the Goderich Peewee soccer team dekes out a Strathroy defender in ac-
tion last week. Goderich shut -out the Strathroy squad 5-0. In other action, the Mosquitos
lost 7-0 to Exeter in Exeter.(photo by Ted Spooner)
added four tallies in the second, one in the
third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth,
while Ripley managed tb, score all four of
their half of the fifth.
Goderich pitcher Chris Clemens col-
lected 10 stikeouts in the victory.
Bob Lumley led the offence with a dou-
ble and a triple, while Jason Cook and
Jason Duckworth also hit three -baggers
and Jamie Stanley and Clemens added
doubles.
WINGHAM 6, GODERICH 4
Wingham pitching held Goderich to just
four single -base hits in a 6-4 win for
Wingham on their home turf July 7.
Stanley, Duckworth, Mark Phillips and
Aaron Duckworth hit safely for Goderich,
who were held scoreless until the third inn-
ing when Jason Duckworth reached base
on an error, to be driven in on singles by
Stanley and Phillips, both of whom also
scored in the inning. Goderich's other run
was scored by Aaron Duckworth in the
seventh.
Wingham scored once in each of the first
two innings and locked up the game with a
four -run third.
GODERICH 23, LUCKNOW 19
Every Goderich player crossed the plate
at least once enroute to winning a 23-19
slugfest at Lucknow on July 8.
All 14 batters came to the plate in the
first inning, as Goderich scored 10 runs
before Lucknow could register three outs.
Lucknow was held to one run in the first
frame, but managed to touch home base
often enough to keep the contest close
through seven innings.
GODERICH 11, LUCKNOW 3
An eight -run surge in the third inning
made the difference for the homeside, as
Goderich downed Lucknow 11-3 in
Goderich on July 10.
Wingham replied with a single run in the
first inning and a pair in the top of the
seventh.
McDougall, MacEwan take first at Maitland Golf
The couples club have been having some
nice turn -outs for their events. On Sunday,
July 5th, 12 couples were out there enjoy-
ing the company and golf of someone other
than their spouse.
Joan McDougall and Don MacEwan
,snagged first place while Bob McDougall
and Grace Neville took second spot. Tied
for third place were Don Stewart and Mary
Lapaine and Jahn Stringer and Jean Han-
ly.
Men's night, with 44 in attendance, saw
one of the golfing McDougalls, Larry, take
home first low net. Dave Almasi was
closest to the pin on No. 5. Other winners
were Bill Cochrane, Mike Sully, Bill Ross,
Jack Hoffmeyer, Neil Shaw, Harold Reffl-
inghaus, Stan Connelly, John Garrett and
Don Stewart.
Ladies Night on July 14th had only 14 in
attendance as the day was very cool and
windy. It was a great relief, to the writer at
least, but now we are right back into the
rot humid weather. Oh well! C'est la golf!
Prizes were given at random for various
scores. Lowest number of putts for the
field was Sally MacEwan, while Ardith
Brissette was closest to the pin on No. 1.
Joan McDougall banged out the longest
drive on No. 9 and Kay King won the hid-
den hole with a 5 on No. 4. Low net on first
flight was Rosie Evans with Edna Looker
taking low net for 2nd flight.
