erich Laketown B to celebrate
years this Sun.ay at Harbour Park
This year the Goderich Laketown Band
is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To
mark the occasion the band will present a
special anniversary - reunion concert at
the Harbour Park Bandstand on Sunday
evening, July 26, 7 p.m.
Many of the band's former conductors
and members are returning to participate.
Past conductors taking part are Charles
Kalbfleisch, Irla Stewart, Wayne Taylor,
Hugh McGregor and Blake Smith. Soloists
are Blake Smith, alto saxophone and the
band's present conductor Bruce Cookson.
Mr. Cookson will sing and play one of his
own compositions. Doug Bundy will be
Master of Ceremonies.
The returning bandsmen and their
families will also be guests of the
Laketown Band at a 2 p.m. rehearsal and a
5 p.m. fish fry.
The Laketown Band was founded (as the
Goderich Kinsmen Band) in Canada's
Centennial year of 1967 as a centennial pro-
ject by Dr. James Peters and Charles
Kalbfleisch. The latter became the new
organization's first bandmaster. Rehear-
sals were first held in the Fire Hall and
were later moved to the music room of the
Goderich District Collegiate. At the time of
the band's conception Mr, Kalbfleisch, a
history teacher at the Goderich District
Collegiate Institute, was also engaged in
extracurricular activities at the collegiate
in training students on musical in-
struments and the subsequent formation of
a school concert band. As a result of Mr.
Kalbfleisch's efforts a keen interest in
music developed in the collegiate which, in
part; led to the addition. of music ..as an ac-
credited subject.
The Laketown Band received its current
name in 1970 as the result of a "namete
band contest" won by the late George Jen-
ner. Mr. Jenner will be remembered as a
long time projectionist in Goderich
theatres and a very talented- and avid
bandsman.
The Laketown Band created public
awareness in 1969 when it started the very
popular Sunday evening Harbour Park
Concert Series: The concerts' inception
was in part clue to the encouragement of
Councillor Walter Sheardown and the
assistance of the late Councillor Reg
Jewell. The first Harbour Park Concert
was •performed on a very hastily -
constructed wooden structure, the basis of
which had been the wrestling ring from the
old West Street Arena, with the late Arnold
McConnell as Master of Ceremonies. The
concert rapidly gained popularity with
both the town's residents and tourists. As a
result of their wide acceptance, the
Goderich 'Lions presented the Town of
Goderich with the present attractive and.
accoustically-fine bandstand, constructed
in 1974, the envy of numerous visiting
bands.
Over the years the Laketown Band has
