New book
award honor
literary
excellence
The'Trillium Book Award, a new $19,000
prize, will be given annually to an Ontario
author in recognition of literary excellence ,
that contributes to a better understanding
of Ontario society and its citizens.
The winning title will be chosen by a
five -member, bilingual, independent jury
comprised of writers, librarians, jour-„
nalists and critics, Minister of Citizenship
and Culture Dr. -Lily Munro said today.
As well,' an additional $2,000 will be
presented -to the publisher of the winning
book" td' acknowledge its editorial role and
to encourage special marketing
campaigns.
The Trillium Book Award will increase
public awareness of Ontario's major con-
tribution to Canadian, publishing and
writing, Dr. Munro said. "Two out of every
thr'+ee English publications in Canada come
from Ontario," she said. "So, too, are an
increasing number of French language
books:"
The Ontario Arts Council will help the
ministry select the •jury..A shortlist of 10,
titles — five fiction and five non-fiction will
be vigorously publicized for a month
before the final winner is announced in
April, 1988.
Books eligible for the prize are trade
books in English and French by -Ontario
authors — who have lived in the province
for at least three years — published in the
previous calendar year. The books may be
of any genre: fiction, biography, history,
poetry, essays, collected stories, travel or
.drama. Text books are ineligible.
The Trillium Book Award is the first
Ontario -wide, government-sponsored
literary prize, Dr. Munro said. "With this
award,oe are becoming vigorous part-
ners in` he full spectrum of activities that
work to promote Canadian and Ontario
literature."
