My Mum and her sisters
didn't sleep much
There was five in my mom's family to
celebrate this festive season. My mom went
to a beautiful , Catholic Church service on
Christmas Eve. My mom would say to
herself: This is a happy occasion when all
family relatives get to see each other. After
P%ch g ,ieeo, pny off, s ,family ,went
Home, iiad a httle Tuh;ncopen one present
each, lunch out the window to see if we could
see Santa Claus coming. The one little pre-
sent my mom open was from her parents.
On Christmas eve it usually was snowing.
There was a snow storm one Christmas
year, it didn't stop storming until early mor-
ning. My mom woke up around 7:35 a.m. to ,
take a little peek before waking the others
up. She went and woke he brother and
sisters up first. They all had to have a peek
at the presents to before waking up the
parents. My mom and family opened their
presents before having breakfast. They
received around five or six presents each.
They received presents that they needed
like boots, hats, mitts, scarfs and snow out-
fits so. that they can play ir,I the snow when
their relatives showed up after breakfast.
They also had their stockings filled with an
apple, orange, grapes, candy cane and some
loose candies._ After my mom's relatives
showed up they all had a meal of turkey,
potatoes, corn, turnip, cranberry sauce,
salads and jellos plus juices to drink. After a
play outside my mom and her family were
happy angels playing with their gifts they
received, plus munching out on fruits and
candies.

It was Christmas Eve and my mom was
getting ready to go to bed.
When she got up she would open her
presents, all she got was a pair of skates and
'some clothes.
Then when she was done breakfast she get
to go to Goderich.
When she was in Goderich she would go to
her mom's mother's house, with her family.
At her grandma's house they would have
dinner then trade gifts.
Then at about 2:30 she would come back to
Nile and have supper at her dad's father's
house.
At her grandfather's they would trade
gifts again.
And that's my mom's Christmas when she
was my age.

Dear Santa.
How is Rudolph, Mrs. Claus, the elves,
and all the other reindeer. How is
everything at the workshop, running
smooth? I have been a good girl or at least
I try. I would like a Popple, a Sem doll, and
Teddy Ruxpin. 1 promise to leave you a
treat on Christmas Eve.
Christmas wasn't much different back in
the 1950's and 60's than it is now. They had
real trees. My mom had one brother and one
sister, my dad had three sisters so most big
gifts were shared and others were small and
often homemade. My mom went -away to her
grandiuothers ands "grandfathers and my
dad stayed home and played with his toys
till it was ready to eat. The turkey dinners
weren't as big as hours now. My mom used
her own knee . socks for stockings and my
dad used his fathers big socks.
My mom and dad looked forward to it
back then as much as I do now and that will
never change.

My Dad would hang his stockings at the
fireplace just before their big turkey dinner.
Since he was an only child my dad would in-
vite
nvite some of his friends over. After dinner he
would get all dressed up for church. At
church their would be a pageant and a choir
would sing a few Christmas carols. When
church was finished he opened one of his
presents and played with it the rest of the
night. When eleven o'clock came dad was
told to go to bed because Santa would soon
be there. So dad went upstairs and went to
sleep. In the morning dad got up and opened
his presents.

My Mum and her sisters lay out cookies,
squares, an orange and a glass ,of milk for
Santa. They would put their stocking over
the door Knob. Then went to bed they didn't
sleep much. The first kid that saw the stock-
ing lumpy would wake up the other four
sisters to see what they had.
They would go in and show their parents
what they got. They decided to all go down
Grandma then Grandpa, Nancy, Margo,
Betty, Muni', Carol half way down Grandpa
stopped tQ tell a stupid story to delay us well
Grandma was turning on the the Christmas
tree lights.
Mum always got the doll with red hair and
always got a book. After the opening of the
presents they had a big breakfast. Mum
always read untill they go to Aunt Leah and
• uncle George for dinner.
