(photo by Patrick Raftis) Cunci1reecusoffer CN The town is seeking an agreement similiar'to one it agreed to with the Cana- dian Pacific Railway, for the purchase of their station near St. Christopher's Beach. CPR has agreed to turn over the ownership of the station outright to the town, for a nominal one dollar payment, with no right of reclaim. The town agreed•to build a lun- chroom facility for,the railway, however it will not be as elaborate a facility as the"one demandedby CN. While thtown and CPR have agreed on the proposal, it must still be approved by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. "CPR have been more co-operative," said Searls, pointing out that the company also agreed to donate land near the station for a park, the local Rotary Club is propos- ing to create. Goderich Town Council has turned down an offer that would have seen the owner- ship of the local Canadian National Railway station, on Maitland Road, turned over to the town for the nominal fee of one dollar. Council, at the Dec. 15 meeting, ac- • cepted a recommendation from the Works and Property Committee not to accept the CN offer because of conditions the railway wants to impose onthe transfer. "There's too many stipulations," said Counc. •Jim Searls, works committee chairman, of the CN offer. CN, in a proposal received at the Dec. 8 council meeting, offered to sell the station itself to the town for one dollar, but would - retain ownership of the land on which it stands and the surrounding property. The railway also insisted on a condition that the town would return the station to CN for one dollar should the railway decide it wanted it back, with one year's notice. "Unless we owned it outright, it's not feasible," Searls said. "You can't put any money into the property, or lease it for a restaurant or something, if they can just take it back. "What they're trying to do is protect themselves and if the economy in the area should pick up, they'll still have the sta- tion," said Searls. The CN offer also stipulated the town must build a structure for use asa lun- chroom by railway workers. The workers currently use the existing station as a lunchroom. Searls said• the town will try to set up a meeting with CN officials to attempt to work out a more acceptable deal. However, "the issue is dead unless they want to be more realistic." THE.
