better _word," he said.
"I have four to do right now. I'm booked
solid until February," he said.
The canoes are built in the Falconer's
back shed, which was an old farmer's barn.
A front display unit has been attached to the
barn/workshop where the various wood
crafts are displayed.
"We can do 75 per cent of the woodwork-
ing that comer, in. I still don't have a couple
of big tools, but I have a friend in Blyth with
the necessary equipment who helps me
out," Mr. Falconer said.
Mr. Falconer explained that he receives
British Columbia red cedar for his canoes,
and he had enough on band right now to do
seven canoes.
'The Falcons Nest' also carry various
other items in their new shop, including un-
finished wood crafts which people can pur
chase and paint and refinish themselves,
woodcraft's supplies and hardwood lumber
(maple, ash, cherry and walnut) available
"to those in the hobby field," he said.
All of the wood on hand is from the area,
Mr. Falconer explained, except the B.C. red
cedar needed for his canoes.
"It takes me ,up to 70 hours to build a
canoe from scratch," Mr. Falconer said. He
owns three at the moment, two wood and
canvas and one he said he'd never sell.
"I'm going to give it to one member of my
family, but I'm not sure who," he said. The
Falconer's have two married sons, one
daughter off in college and one grandchild
(with another on the way).
Most people want their canoes built, he
said, "because they know what they want."
He said he has the capabilities to make four
different models of canoes, weighing
anywhere from 42 to 85 pounds.
Gail constructs most of the wood crafts
which are available in the display portion of
the business.
"For some of the crafts, painting takes
the time," she said. "It's impossible to real-
ly put a time on these things. Some take
several hours while others just a few
minutes." .
Inside are various wood crafts, stain -
glassed items as well as homemade jams

and jellies.
"We're hoping to have things that are dif-
ferent for Christmas," she said. "You know,
unique ideas plus things that you can't buy
in a regular store."
At the moment, just Mr. and Mrs.
Falconer work at the shop, which is conve-
niently situated behind their house on their
45 -acre property,
"Basically it's just the two of us," he said.
"We hope to keep it that way. If we're rush-
ed, we'll maybe hire somebody."
"It'll be nice if we get that big, but then
again we don't want to get too big," she said.
The present location at 'The Falcons Nest'
is ideal for travellers, just off of Highway 21.
"We're just three miles from the square,"
Mrs. Falconer said, "I used to time it going
to work."
The pair also intend to post signs along the
highway route, but certain rules and regula-
tions have to be followed first.
"When the, tourist trade starts, we'll need
signs," she said.
Maybe by then 'The Falcons Nest' will
have taken off, and signs won't be needed.
