The Goderich Legion Midgets remained
undefeated in league play after wins last
week over Exeter and Lucan.
In Exeter last Wednesday night, the
:i,egion Midgets took control of a 1-0 game in
the last two periods to win 4-2. In the first
period, 20 minutes in penalties were called
against Goderich. But the outstanding play
of Goderich goalie Jay Williamson and the
awesome penalty killing proved too much
for Exeter, despite what the referees tried
to do for them. Exeter did score first 18
seconds into the game but that was the
result of a misplay by the goalie and his
defencemen. Exeter clinged to a one -goal
MINOR HOCKEY
lead even though Goderich had many
chances.
In the second period, Rod Nurse got the
equalizer when he took a pass from Gary
Erb and blasted a shot by the Exeter
goalkeeper. The game remained tied as end
to end play highlighted the period. Goderich
went ahead when Mark Cauchi was checked
into the goalie and Byron Bowman knocked
down a clearing pass and blew a shot into
the open net.
Darrel Durnin got what would be the win-
ning goal two minutes into the third period
when he ripped a shot past a screened
goaltender. Ian MacKinnon and Bowman
received assists. Goderich went ahead by
three when Wayne Nivens took a pass from
Scott Glew, rushed up ice and slid it under
the goalie. Exeter finally scored again on
the power play with under two minutes to
play.
Against Lucan here Saturday night, the
Midgets scored three goals in the first
period and went on to win an exciting 4-1
game. It was a fast -paced contest with ac-
tion going end to end. Mark Cauchi scored
his first of two on the same shift when he
broke in from the wing and scored assisted
by Roc( Nurse. Thirty-three seconds later he
scored again when he converted a pass from
Tom Bean.
This got Goderich going and Darrell Dur-
nin scored 35 seconds later. Neil Rodger and
Glew picked up assists. Lucan would score
their only goal of the night when a player in-
tercepted a bad clearing pass and went m to
score- to break Greg Townsend's bid for a
shutout. Durnin scored again in the third
period with Nivins and Rodger setting him
up.
The game featured many clean hits with
Goderich dishing out the majority of the
punishment.
The Legion Midgets play at home this
Saturday against Strathroy which should
prove to be their toughest opposition thus
far.
