Goderich . goalie Gaynor glows
The Goderich Sailors were defeated by the
Walkerton Blackhawks here Friday night
by a 5-1 score.
The Blackhawks scored the only goal of
the first period when Scott Girdler put the
puck behind Sailo6goalie Randy Gaynor.
The Sailors scored a power play goal,
playing with a two-man advantage, just 41
seconds into the middle period. Chris
Sideris,the Sailors' leading scorer, notched
his ninth goal of the year to deadlock the
contest. Defenceman Jim Beattie and left
winger Darren Doak received assists on the
play.
Ken Helmka put the Blackhawks back on
top and a power play goal by DaVe Artibello
in the last minute of the period gave Walker-
ton a 3-1 second intermission lead.
Randy Fritz and Scott Biesenthal scored
for the Blackhawks in the third period while
goalie Dave Al was blanking the Sailors at
the other end of the rink.
Randy Gaynor played well in the Sailors'
net, despite the five goals that got by him.
The Sailors' "hound line" of Darrell Dur-
nin, Darren Doak , and Chris Sideris
generated the best scoring chances for
Goderich, but, overall, the Sailors were
unable to take advantage of their scoring
opportunities.
"We don't have a lot of goal -scoring poten-
tial in our lineup," explained Sailor coach
Dick Madge. "We have to try to play sound
defensive hockey and hope we can get a few
breaks around the opposition's net. Our
game -plan has to be built around reducing
the number of mistakes , we make
defensively.'
The Sailors played without two regular
defencemen Friday. Kevin Telford was sit-
ting out a suspension and Daryl Madge was
sidelined with an injured shoulder. Both
should be back in action this weekend. The
Sailors play at home Friday at 8:30 p.m.
against the Port Elgin Bears. In three
previous meetings, the Sailors and the
Bears have tied twice and the Bears won the
other game by one goal, 7-6.
Sunday, the Sailors travel to Hanover to
play the first -place Barons who have lost on-
ly one game so far, a 4-3 setback at the
hands of Port Elgin.
The Sailors have been using several
midget players in their lineup, and they
have been crucial to the Sailors survival this
season.
"Without these midget players, we would
be in big trouble," Madge said. "We are
pleased with the co-operation we have
received from the midget coaches in allow-
ing us to use them."
The midget team is in first place in the
Shamrock League standings,: and are
undefeated so far in lea # ° i'lhy: ", '"` ''
"We hope the experience the kids get
playing with us will benefit the midget
team, too," Madge said.
Darrell Durnin, Barry Thompson, Tom
Bean and Byron Bowman have played
especiallyell in their games with the
Sailors. Gary) Erb had a solid outing filling
in on the depleted Sailor defence Friday as
well.

Season's
Pass
Okay, folks, let's play a little `What's my
line?.
First off, place all bets and pay atten-
tion. The information needed to win the pot
will be flowing fast and furious.
I'm not too old and certainly not as
young as I used to be. To be specific, I turn-
ed 22 last September.
Standing 5'11" tall, weighing in at a -not -
too -paltry 195 pounds I'm interested in
sports. Weekly sports which derive in and,
out of this community.
I have fairly short (until it gets long )
light brown hair. I wear glasses 92 per cent
of the day and I started at this office last
Wednesday morning.
Any guesses now?
I was born in a hospital in Burlington,
Ontario. I don't remember much of that,
but my mother sure does. I lived the first
12 years of my existence in that city with
three younger brothers and, of course,
dear old mom and dad. No cats or dogs for
this family. Mom figured four boys was
more than enough to handle.
We as a unit moved to Freelton, a rural
setting situated nicely between Guelph to
the north and Hamilton to the south on
Highway 6.
I attended high school in Dundas at
Parkside—home of the Panthers—until I
graduated from Grade 13 what seemed
like eons ago. But it wasn't, really. It was
in June of 1983.
Being accepted into the journalism
course at Conestoga (Coconut is what we
called it) College in Kitchener furthered
my scholastic endeavors and after one -
and -one-half years of that nonsense, I'
graduated and was immediately hired to
work as a reporter/photographer at the
Mitchell Advocate. I've been there ever
since.
Still have any clues as to who I'm referr-
ing? Keep reading.
My parents still live, and, for the most
part, play in Freelton. My brother Steve is
an honors co-op business student at the
University of Waterloo (where we kid him
of his school's super OUAA football.
squads). Scott, the family clown, is enroll-
ed at Grade 13 in Dundas Highland Secon-
dary
School, where he too is doing very
well. Jeff, the baby, is in Grade 11 at my
alma mater where his claim to fame is the
Junior Football team, where he played vir-
er31 w, rt.hwhile position. He's big.
eiows : Better yet, I know it too.
Like 'said earlier, I've been toiling with
another Signal -Star paper in Mitchell since
January of 1985. My prime concern at that
weekly' paper was sports. Having only a
two-man editorial staff in Mitchell, I also
performed other duties known to us
newspaper types. It was fun.
This opportunity to jump to the sports
desk here in Goderich came up about one
month ago, and here I am.
I've been in Goderich before, so some
people might remember me (although I
doubt it). Early in 1984 (March to be
precise), while I was still , in college, I
worked for the Signal -Star during their an-
nual YCW publication which hit the streets
and arena throughout the March break. I
helped cover the hockey -games.
Does anyone remember? Does that huge
clue help?
Anyways, I didn't do much in town dur-
ing that week,
althoughh I did frequent the
local ice surface a lot. To those players,
era
,
into and whoever I
ran into that suc-
cessful week (Goderich won the 'AA'
championship after they had been knocked
out early in the 'A' division), I'm back.
And you thought the town was safe
again, didn't you? Wrongo.
Okay, time is up. Have I jogged any
minds, triggered any memories or caused
any intellectual stir? I didn't think so.
To all those who lost the bet, my name is
Andy Bader. I'm the new sports writer
here at the Signal and with your help, I
plan to make these sports pages jump
alive with news you've never seen, heard
or even cared about before.
So, in short, hello. I'll be seeing you
around. Oh yes, and send the money in the
mail, although I won't hold my breath.

Elevator Bantams riding high with two
The Goderich Bantam Elevators increas-
ed their leaguestanding to six wins, one loss
and one tie with victories over Exeter and
Lucan this past week.
In Exeter last Wednesday, the Elevators
used a great team effort to outplay and
outscore Exeter 2-1. All three forward lines
played aggressively and the defensive pair-
ings forced the play at the blueline. Jason
Million and Mike Stegenstad stopped many
opponents' rushes in particular.
Goderich took the lead at the 2:58 mark
with Tim Harrison scoring on a pass from
Brian O'Neill. Both teams had great scoring
opportunities but failed to capitalize on their
chances.
What proved to be the go-ahead and winn-
ing goal came midway in the second period.
Brian Lane picked up a loose puck at centre,
skated down the wing and fired a shot
beneath the Exeter goalie.
Continued forechecking by Greg Alcock,'
Andre Cauchi and George Sideris prevented
Exeter scoring opportunities. When the
home side did get their chances, especially
in the third period, only the excellent
goaltending of Shawn Currie kept the
"goose egg" on the scoreboard.
The bid for a shutout was lost, however, in
the final two minutes of the game when Ex-
eter scored on a questionable play.

Huron Park took the lead for good and won a
nailbiter 3-2.

only team to have defeated Goderich so far
this season in league play.

led by Jason Million, keeping the Lucan at-
tackers to the outside.

day' with Strathroy providing the
competition.
Machinist Atoms play well
but lose two close games
The Goderich Machinist Atoms dropped a
pair of close games on the weekend to Lucan
4-3 Saturday and 6-3 at the hands of Exeter
Sunday.
Andrew Scott opened the scoring for
Goderich early in the opening period with an
assist going to Bryan Hodges. Before the
period ended, however, Lucan tied the
game.
The home team went ahead in the first
minute of the middle period but two goals
three minutes apart gave the visitors the
lead.
Chris Dickson and Scott (his second of the
game) gave the locals the lead after two
periods of play.
Lucan tied the game midway through the
final period, though, and scored the winner
with less than four minutes to play.
The following day, Exeter jumped out to a
3-0 lead before Goderich got one back on a
marker by Derek Gilchrist midway through
the second period. Early in the third period,
Exeter regained the momentum and
restored their three -goal margin.
Chris Dickson and Jeff Rau scored two
minutes apart for Goderich to cut into the
Exeter lead but a pair of late goals by the
home team put the nail in the coffin for the
visitors.
Outstanding performances for the locals
were turned in by Jason Hayter, Mike
McBride, Derek Gilchrist and Taylor
Cicchini.
Novices lose a pair on weekend
The Goderich Novices dropped a pair of
road games this past weekend, losing 8-0 to
Lucan Saturday and 3-2 to Exeter Sunday.
Lucan led 1-0 after one period, 2-0 after

final frame to win easily.
The following day in Exeter, the home.
side opened the scoring early in the middle
period only to see Goderich tie the count less
than one minute cater' on a goal by David
Lui ley. Craig Corrivieu and James Moody

Exeter took a one -goal lead again.

in the third frame on a goal by Trevor Mac-
Caulay with Bryan Currie assisting.
