The program, entitled The Better Breathing Program for Patients With Lung Diseases, is co-ordinated by SalimRem- tulla, director of physiotherapy at e hospital and president of the Lung Associa- tion for Huron -Perth Counties. "The program was designed to promote health education for patients with lung disease. It is designed to teach them about their disease, how to manage the disease and the problems associated with it," Rem- tulla said. This is the first year the six-week pro- gram for persons with chronic lung d disease 15 has been offered in the o_u heevening people are taking part sessions. Remtulla explained that chronic obstruc- tive lung disease, more commonly referred to as COLD, comprises three major diseases: emphysema, chronic bronchitis,, and asthma. "Symptoms of COLD include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and expectora- tion. These symptoms are frightening and debilitating to the person and eventually lead to frustration and depression for those afflicted with the disease. This affects the person's work, their family and their social roles," Remtulla said. People with chronic lung disease tend to be middle- to elder -gad a rimarilnot ay bes cause disease symptoms recognized in the younger ages. The expected behefits from the program are the improvement of symptoms, increased exercise tolerance and reduction of hospitalization," Remtulla explained. Persons .taking part in the program are subjected to guest speakers, video tapes, slide presentations and weekly exercise and relaxation sessions. The first session, called "know your lungs and put yourself in control, was conducted by Remtulla. This session was held to ex- plain the anatomy of the lungs, the par- ticular lung diseases and how breathing was affected. "It is really important to know the pro- blem and how to manage it. The final session will be held December 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the physiotherapy depart- ment at the hospital. Entitled "keep living your life", it will be conducted by Salim Remtulla. "People with lung disease tend to hiber- nate. They tend not to mingle with society. Instead, they tend to be on their own ,because they are too embarassed to cough or wheeze in public. These people have to be encouraged to travel and get out and feel good about life," Remtulla said. "We have to teach them to pace their ac- tivities and to plan their activities. Many know they have to do it but they often want someone to tell them to do it." Although this is the first year for such a program, Remtulla said the response was more than he expected. He noted that pro- gram participants have been bringing another person with them to the program. Because of this year's high interest in the program, Remtulla expects to offer the pro- gram again next year.
