The G.D.C.I. Senior Vikings played two
excellent games against the more ex-
perienced Stratford Northwestern Huskies
but lost both games and the Huron -Perth
Championship.
In the first game played here last Tues-
day the Vikes took an early 10-2 lead and
held on to a 14-13 half-time advantage in
the low scoring half. The Huskies came on
in the second half and defeated Goderich
44-25. "
The Goderich girls seemed to be winning
the game everywhere but on the score
sheet. Cold shooting plagued the Vikes as
no one had double figures. Cathie Gallow
led the scorers with 7 points, followed by
Katharine Murphy with 5, Mary Katherine
Stapleton with 4, Erin Robinson with 3 and
Jenny Allen, Joanne Campbell and Jenn
Peters with a basket each.
It was a determined Vikings team that
headed to Stratford on Thursday. The Vik-
ings again took the lead and led 30-27 at the
half. The Goderich girls widened the lead
to 10 points in the third quarter but then •
foul trouble hit! Mary Katherine Stapleton
who played the best game by a Goderich
center in years, fouled out and Jennifer
Peters, who was also playing well, follow-
ed Stapleton to the bench. The Vikes were
forced to play most of the final quarter
with five guards. The Goderich girls made
a great effort but fell short 62-52 as the
Huskies came on with 18 fourth quarter
points.
Even so the outcome was in doubt until
the last minute of play. Mary Katherine
Stapleton led her team with 22 points and
Jenn Peters added 11. The two past
players dominated the boards until they
were forced out of the game. Katharine
Murphy with 8, Cathie Gallow with 7 and
Jenny Allen with 4 rounded out the
Goderich scorers.
The Vikings play again at the W.O.S.S.A.
Championships in two weeks November 28
and 29 in Strathroy.

goaltender Greg Townsend turn-
ed in outstanding performance to lead
Goderic to the victory. The victory was
the team's sixth with two ties. Goderich .
has taken fourteen points out of a possible,
sixteen.
Erb opened the seoring when he blasted
a shot from outside the blue line to give
Goderich an early 1-0 lead. But. Goderich
• played poorly and -gave up three goals
mostly due to poor defensive play. Before
the period ended Goderich began to play
much better and the result was two goals
to tie the game up. Rod Nurse scored the
first of these two goals on the powerplay
when Mike Radford set him up on a
beautiful passing play. Darrell Durnin tied
the game up with less than two minutes
left in the first period. Mike Beange drew
the assist.

like a different team as Townsend and the
defence shut out Port Stanley and the team •

Bailey was the dominant player on the
floor, scoring 22 of her team's 39 points.
The Vikings were led by Maureen
Stapletdr., with 11, Rhonda Teal, with nine,
and Pam Fritzley, with eight points.
In Stratford, the Vikings were unable to
cope with the Huskies' press and turned
the ball over too often to stay close.
Although they were down by only five
points at half-time, the Vikings wound up
losing by 20.
Rhonda Teal played well defensively
and led the Vikings' scoring with 10 points.

Sailors earn 6-6 tie in final minute of game
The Goderich Sailors showed what hard
work and discipline cart do for a hockey
team when they gained a 6-6 tie with the
Wingham Ironmen here Friday night.
The Sailors took 'only eight minor
penalties and were able to score three
power play goals while the Ironmen had 1.2'
penalties and managed only one power
play goals. It was the Sailors, though, who
had to come up with the last minute
heroics to gain the tie.
Chris Sideris scored the tying goal with
38 seconds left in the game. The Sailors
were on a power play because of a penalty
to Wingham's Steve Alton and had goalie
Randy Gaynor on the bench in favour of an
extra attacker. The move paid off as
Sideris combined with Darrel Durnin and,
Daryl Madge to net the equalizer.
The goal was Sideris' second of the
game. Shawn Larder also had two goals
and Darren Doak and Madge had one
apiece.
For the Ironmen, Paul Tolton had a pair
and Paul Priestap, . Kevin Dunn, Jason
Goodall and Jamie McPherson scored one
goal each.
The Sailors led 2-1 after the first •period,
but Wingham held a 5-4 lead going into the
final period.
The same two teams went head to head
in Wingham Sunday and the Ironmen
prevailed for a 5-1 victory over the Sailors.
The first period provided some excellent
hockey by both teams. There was no scor-
ing but lots of end to end action. In the se-
cond period, the Sailors let down and the
Ironmen scored four goals to take control
of the game.
Doug Stephenson, Brett Cameron, Jason
Goodall and Kevin Dupn were the goal
scorers.
Each team scored once in the third
period. Tracey Kennedy got the Ironmen's
final tally while Sailors' captain Daryl
Madge broke Mitoh Braun's shutout bid at
the other end of the rink.
The Sailors have only one game this
weekend. Friday night here at 8:30 p.m.
when the Walkerton Blackhawks come to
town.
Lions deafeat
Parkhill 6-1
In Parkhill last Friday, the
hometowners tallied three quick first
period goals en route to a 6-1 win over the
Goderich Lions Pee Wee's.
The score in this contest wasn't a true
judgement of the game as Parkhill made
the most of their opportunities and the
Lions didn't. Paul Hamilton, the Lions top
player for the night, was robbed twice in
the first period and this could have kept
things close.,
The Lions were not helped in this game
either as they took all of the five penalties
called. Aarin Duckworth scored the
Goderich goal in the third period as he
banged in a Jeff Beange rebound.
The teams will be on the road again this
week, when they play in Exeter, Wednes-
day and Lucan, Friday.
