The children are already noticing that Christmas is just around the corner but I never get started until Christmas eve. I always seem to find so many other things . to do. ' Last week, Santa gave me a candy cane. I didn't' really know him but he said "Hello Martha." (I figured he wasn't a real Santa because The Santa always called me "Queenie.") However, he asked me if I had been a good girl - I wasn't sure - and gave me a peppermint candy cane. • "Never leave what you are doing until you can . reach your arms around it . and clench your hands on the other side." This bit of advice is from "A Book for Young Men. "Good advice," said a young man, " but what if she screams?" Speaking of old books, not newspapers, here's one to make you think. "We want life in its fullest activities - an increase of . our manufactories, better railway facilities and more energy among our business men in general." This was The Signal -Star back in 1879. I guess things haven't changed that much. They list enterprises like rafting logs down from Georgian Bay for cheaper lumber Which would be an impetus to the business by "centreing" the trade in our midst. They sure needed to think about changing the spelling of some of their words. Now this is the old, old, Signal that I'm talking about. They had a huge column en- titled Lake Disasters which, thankfully, we don't see anymore. An example of one of the lake disasters listed in the paper was: "In Windsor, the tug J.P. Clark was driven on the Canada Shore near Walkerville last evening during a heavy gale and capsized. The cook is supposed to be drowned in the cabin. All others were saved." On another page, local news was listed. One item told of a fire which burned St. Georges Church. Another item listed was , the idea for a proposed building scheme of a direct railroad line to the seaboard to be called the Grand Central Ontario line. The line would run from Goderich to Port Perry than on to Toronto and Ottawa and finally to the Atlantic ports. Still in the 1800's, the council met at Mar- tin's Hotel in Dungannon. ,Among other items on the agenda were the expenses in- curred in caring for and indigent - $2 for five days and on sending hin to Goderich Jail, $1 for each witness and $2.50 for the magistrate. There used to be a poem ruff on the front page of the paper as well as two full col- umns devoted to "A Few Days of My Life" which was a "mushy" love story. The next two columns dealt with "Mark Twain on Babies". Apparently he was quite and after dinner speaker but I could hardly read that paper. I hope many of you were out by the Little Lakes this fall. Someone told me the turtles were back but I didn't see any. A little while ago, the colors were fantastic with the muted colors around stark black bartrees, white water and clear sky. I ave already told you of my experience wit the BIG ones down at what is now St. Christopher Beach. So manyof the old White birch trees were taken out to make a roadway. If you don't know what I'm talk- ing about, I have a small painting of the area and you will be surprised at the. changes of then and now. Hopefully there will not be anymore damage down there. Pray a little. Love, Martha.
