Sharing nursing experiences and concerns basis\
of Toronto seminar attended by Goderich nurse
Sharing nursing experiences and con-
cerns was the basis of a nursing seminar
attended by a representative of Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital.
Chris Garrick, rrirve !!' the intensive
care unit (ICU) tthe hospital, was chosen
by her fellor colleagues in April to repre-
sent the hospital at the From Novice to Ex-
pert - Excellence and Power in Clinical
Nursing Practice conference sponsored by
the Registered Nurses Association of On-
tario (RNAO). This was the first large-
scale conference for the RNAO.
"Seventy-five hospitals (including
public health and medical centres) in On-
tario were invited to the conference by the
RNAO. Each hospital was supposed to ko
choose a representative who they felt was
an expert nurse or practitioner to send to
the conference. In Goderich, they left it up
to the nursing staff to choose who should
go," Garrick said.
Garrick was notified of the selection of
her as the candidate in April while she was
on sick leave. She has worked at the
hospital in ICU since 1978. Prior to this,
she worked at the London Psychiatric
Hospital and at a nursing home.
Only 47 out of the 75 invited hospitals
sent representatives, however, there were
about 425 interested persons who attended
the conference, Garrick said.
Guest speaker for the conference, held
i October 23 and 24 at the Royal York Hotel
in Toronto, was Dr. Patricia Benner an
associate professor with the School of Nur-
sing at the University of California at San
Francisco. She is also the author of the
book, From Novice to Expert - Excellence
and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice.
Prier io attending the conference, each
nurse was asked to submit a written
resume on a nursing experience which the
person thought affected their own nursing
life.
"She (Benner) selected 13 resumes
which she felt dealt with an interesting
topic and then had each of the 13 nurses
talk about their experiences," Garrick
said.

Topics covered in this section of the con-
ference included a report by a psychiatric
nurse who had to deal with a suicide during
her shift as well as reports on the ex-
periences and problems related to
obstetric nursing.
"The nurses talked about very emo-
tional happenings that any nurse could
relate in some manner to her own ex-
periences. Weheard about things where
,
you could say "Geez, I've had that happen
to me," and wonder how they handled it,"
Garrick said.
The 47 nurses who attended the con-
ference were then broken upo into small
groups during which time they discussed

their own various experiences and pro-
blems and how they dealt with them.
They also recommended strategies for
promoting clinical .excellence in ad-
ministration, education, resin[ and
,clinical nursing departments.
Benner, who is currently researching
ICU nurses and ICU nursing techniques,
discussed various clinical experiences in
which the nurse's caring and expertise
made a significant difference for the
client.
Upon her return from the conference,
Garrick fielded some questions fron, nurs-
ing colleagues about the conference. She
said there is a possibility of her speaking
about the conference at the next chapter
meeting of the RNAO.
