HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-11-12, Page 27PAGE 12A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 12 1986 Brookside halls filled with Monster Daze products BROOKSIDE BROADCAST 7 By ADRIAN KAU, MELANIE WYLDS and JASON CAMERON Students at Brookside were kept busy with Halloween parties and activities dur- ing the past few weeks. Students in Mr. Culp's Grade 5 class would like to thank parent volunteers Joan Black and Michelle Brindley for thier help at the pumpkin carving table. Other cen- tres enjoyed by the students were The Monster Gallery, the Creepy. Monster Race, finger puppets and a listening centre. Mrs. Mather's Grade 1 class has had a great week finishing up their Halloween centres, having a party and doing other monster -related things. Now they are ready to learn about Community Helpers and their jobs. Students in Mrs. Clarke's Grade 3 class are spending thisweek concentrating on sentence structure. They are hoping to become experts at. knowing when and • where to put capitals and periods. They are also enjoying a book called Twenty - One Balloons by William PeneduBois. It is taking them on a journey to the island of Krakatoa. On October 27, Mrs. Diane Park visited the Grade 6 classrooms as a guest of the VIP program. She spoke to the students about non-prescription drugs. Mr. Hazlett's Grade 8V class and Mrs. Allen's Grade 7 class travel to Victoria Public School every Tuesday afternoon for family stydies and industrial arts. Mrs. Wbrsell's Grade 5 portable one class hada special Halloween lunch oh Oc- tober 31. They enjoyed Scarios, celery and carrots, pop and dessert. Special thanks to the parents who helped at the lunch. The Brookside halls in the primary wing are now filled with the products of our two Monster Daze theme mornings. Each group of 12 students (Grades K.to 3) had the opportyp)ty to visit four wor%Cshops during the two mornings. The following • sessions were presented. Monster Music, by Mrs. Jewitt and Mrs. Ottewell, had children learning a Monster Boogie Woogie song and making a spooky Halloween sound tape using rhythm. in- struments and a chant. The Box Puppet session by Mrs. Blan- chette let . the students make wierd creatures from boxes and other found materials. In the Playdough Monster session of- fered by Mrs. Cameron, the children mold- ed monsters from colored play dough. They also colored and 'tut out paper monsters and clothes for them. Mrs. Blake and Mr. Tremeer offered a Storytime session in the library. during which time the students heard the story The Riddle Monster. They then made up riddles and Knock -Knock jokes about monsters. - Paper Bag Puppets, led by Mrs. Graham, had students creating monsters out of lunch sized paper gags. In Monster Anagrams, led by Mrs. Young, the children brainstormed monster words for letters of the alphabet and then used these words for each letter of their own name to make monster arms and mini -monsters. Monster Math by Miss Mathers saw students making graphs out of monster names. Miss Jewitt led a session called Monster Big Books during which time the children made one big book entitled Monster Monster What Do You See? as well as some pop-up books about the sounds of Halloween. Mrs. Sygrove's session, Monster Booklets, saw children sharing the story called The Hungry Thing. They discussed where monsters could be found and what they would eat. They also illustrated booklets called In a dark, dark wood. Students who took the Monster Cookies session offered by Mrs. Webster and Mrs. 4 Bakker got to make gingerbread cookies in the shape of monsters. They decorated the cookies with raisins, pretzels and chinese noodles. After the cookies were baked, they were distributed to staff and students. The students made Goblin faces .with in- terchangeable eyes and mouths in the Monster Faces session led by Mrs. Heslinga. In Monster Drama by Mrs. Moffat, the children listened to tapes of monsterious sounds and then interpreted and acted out what they though they heard. In Monster Menus, by Mrs. McDowell, the children brainstormed about the foods they eat each day. They talked about Canada's four food groups and then made monster menu's for breakfast, lunch and supper. Each group made a portion of a rolled up monster in Mrs. Ciarke's session entitled The Incredible Unrolling Monster. The monster was kept rolled up until noonhour Friday when he was unrolled. They also made Blob Juice by muting the following ingredients; 1 cup bone juice,1 cup purple goo, 3 drops of green slime and 3 eyeballs. It was deliciously yucky, thank you. The primary wing had two most Suc- cessful thanks and would like to say you to all helper's and participants. Yes you know a good window/store front display increases prospect interest, product awareness/acceptance and walk-in traffic. You already know a good store front sells! Now consider the impact town -wide. Your good showing adds to the total spirit of our com- munity. A spirit that shouts "Christmas is alive and well, and best fouhd in Goderich." Your involvement stimulates a great sense of Pride in our com- munity. Your participation helps encourage local residents to keep their consumer dollars at home where it will do the most good. And your imagination will help establish Goderich for miles around as the place to "must see, must shop" at Christmas time. LET'S GO FOR IT! In a continuing effort to do our part, The Goderich Signal -Star will again offer trophies to the best window/store front efforts ,of the. season. One trophy will be awarded for each of 3 Categories (see below). Plus, our Annual "Grand Prize" trophy will be awarded for the Best Christmas window/store front in the Town of Goderich. The White House has had it all year. Their name stays on, will yours go next to it? Join the Fun! Spiff up for Christmas! - It's positive. It's progressive.
