Basics and Beyond is an adventure
Two London women have tackled the
tough business of publishing and appear to
be winning Basics and Beyond, a cookbook
written, edited and published by Bonnie
MacDonald and Marie O'Connell is now
back in London area bookstores after the
first printing became a runaway success by
selling out of a 5,000 copy press run. It's just
completed its second printing and is once
E
arly newspaper ads were
again enjoying brisk sales.
Basic and Beyond was initially produced
as a fund-raising project in 1983 but the
publishers, armed with the quality of the
book, the selection of recipes and many
positive comments received from the
readers of the initial press run felt that they
could do battle with this excellent private,
publishing venture.
It was Saturday and by the time we were
ready to leave Goderich, the skies looked
threatening. It looked like they were going
to "bust out all over ds."
We had decided to go to Sarnia to see our
grandchildren (a greats) who live there.
We were away by noon but, with the look of
the skies, I didn't knowif we were pushing „
our luck or not - we might be getting into
worse weather down there.
However, by the time we hit Grand Bend,
there was only sunshine ahead of us and
blue -black skies behind us.
It was still sunny when we left Sarnia
Monday morning but there were those gray
skies over Goderich. I think the clouds just'
sap -still over Goderich during the weekend.
The sky looked the same Monday as it did
when weleft Saturday. Nonetheless, we had
a lovely weekend and I'm glad we went
despite Saturday's threatening skies. ,
I was reading an item recently which
mentionned John Kane - teacher, principal
and friend. The article also noted that John
is the great -great-grandson of Thomas Mac -
queen who was the founder and editor of the
Goderich Signal Star over 140 years ago..
Back then, when the paper was published
at an office across from the Post Office, the
newpaper cost $1.50 per year if paid in ad-
vance. If not paid in advance, it would cost
you $2 for a year's subsription. Advertising
was also relatively cheap at only eight cents
a line for the fiat insertion and two cents a
line thereafter.
Examples of ads placed in the newspaper
back in its early days include the following:
•
ROUND 'N
ABOUT
With Martha Rathburn
E. Campion, solicitor, has "Half -a -million
dollars to lend on farm or town property at
six per cent."
Mrs. E. Warnock, an agent for Anchor
Line Steamers, placed an ad containing this
information:. cruises "plying from New
York to Glasgow, Scotland. Cabins $65 to
$80.'
In February 1879, "The Park House"
(also known as. Summer House) was pur-
chased by Captain E. Marlton. Marlton has
had the entire premises newly furnished and
re -fitted and is now prepared to receive
families, commercial travellers and other
boarders either by day or by terms. The
. Hotel, is situated on the most eligile spot in
Ontario, overlooking the harbour, Lake
Huron and the Maitland River, while the
scenery is unsurpassed in Canada. . Good
stabling is also provided.
Daniel Gordon, undertaker, advertised
"Patent Embalmin Process" which among
other things "will keep the body perfectly
sweet and good for any desirable time."
How aboutthat for advertising? ,
The newspaper also had a Varities column
Bonnie, a dietitian for 10 years, and Marie
a food service manager who has worked in
the food services industry for 20 years, com-
bined talents to produce a cook's guide to
cooking.
In Goderich the book is available at All
Around The House, Kings, Suncoast Craft
Corner and May's.

If you come across any cookbooks by
Blanche Pownall Garrett, you are in luck.
Mrs. Garrett, now deceas", ws very in-
terested in Canadian plants and their uses.
She had searched through.hundreds of early
Canadian cookbooks that reflect a way of
life of dealin with each day's problems.
Her love of'prving fruits and vegetables
from Canadian gardens, fields, meadows
and forests prompted her to learn their
treasury of home remedies. I don't know for
sure whether he books are still available but
I do look for them in book stores and at book
sales.
Enjoy the sun and give an old friend a call
