GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1986—PAGE 3
A community service designed to help
persons who are emotionally disturbed or
distressed is new operating in Goderich.
Community Psychiatric Services (CPS),
_ adizz khe direction of Joy Daymond, `?
Degan counseuuag
The day program and individual
counselling sessions are available to per-
sons on an out-patient basis who have been
admitted to psychiatric facilities or who '
feel they need help to cope with problems
which arise in everyday life, Daymond
. said. •
Community Psychiatric Services is a
sai;eii►ie prug -ratn of:arca' wy the
psychiatry dtepartment at Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital and is under
the medical direction of Dr. Michael
Conlon.
About two years ago, Conlon, director of
the psychiatry department at the hospital
began to realize the need for such a ser-
vice. He noted that two other towns in the
county, Wingham and Clinton, had a com-
munity pyschiatric service and felt the
need in Goderich was great enough to in-
stitute a similiar service.
In April 1986, Community Psychiatric
Services in Goderich received approval
and funding 'for a two-year pilot project
from the Ministry of Jiealth.
"The goal of the program is to avoid ad-
mission or re -admission to a psychiatric
unit. We hope to help the clients identify
and deal more effectively with their pro-
blems and increase their self-esteem, self -
growth and self-awareness," Daymond
said.
Although some patients are referred to
the service by area physicians and other
agencies, Daymond noted that the service
does accept self -referrals.
"We want people to be able to call and
say can you give me help," she said:
Currently, there are about 15 persons
who are receiving treatment from CPS.
The service can accomodate 20 people at
one time.
CPS offers a structured day program as
well as•individual counselling sessions.
The structured dayprogram, which runs
Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
offers such topics as living skills, goal
planning, relaxation techniques, asser-
tiveness training, self awareness, group
therapy sessions, recreational activities,
exercise and craft groups as well as oppor-
tunity for individual counselling sessions
with Daymond or her staff which consists
of social worker Karen Day-Rondeau and
Gail Huber, a nurse.
"The client can be a part of any of the
day program sessions, depending on his or
her needs," Daymond explained.
The day program is geared to helping
clients improve their use of community
resources and social contacts for support
when they are away from or finish their
sessions at CPS, she said:
"It is up to the individual whether or not
they attend sessions on a regular basis or
at all," Daymond said.
' When a client contacts CPS for help, he
or she receives a counsellor who works
'with them towards attaining their goals.
The length of • the stay with the service
depends upon, the need and progress of the
client.

Joy Daymond, director of Community Pyschiatric Services in Goderich.
Daymond stressed that each client is
treated individually and made to feel com-
fortable and very much at home while
receiving help.
The goal of CPS is to not only to help
emotionally disturbed or distressed per-
sons but to do so in a way that eliminates
the need for hospitalization.
"Anxiety, depression and anything else
that makes a person unable to cope with
the everyday stress of life doesn't mean a
person has to be hospitalized anymore. We
can help them here on an out-patient basis
away froze] the hospital. We hope to reduce
pyschiatric hospital admissions and stays
for Goderich and area. °
"CPS is a place where people can
receive the help they need in a confidential
manner," Daymond said.
Anyone who feels they need help dealing
with an emotional or stress problem is urg-
ed to contact Joy Daymond, Karen Day-
Rondeau or Gail Huber at CPS by calling
524-8316.
Aside from day program, CPS also of-
fers individual counselling sessions for
those people who need help but feel a group
program. does not suit their needs.
"A person doesn't have to attend our day
program to receive help," Daymond said,
explaining that Thursday nights at the cen-
tre were reserved for individual counsell-
ing sessions.
Daymond is already working on
establishing a 'young adult program
directed at teenagers to persons who are in
their early 20's.
This program would include such items
as learning employment skills, such as
writing resumes and interview techniques,
as well as a communications program.
"A lot of people in this age group have
difficulties in their lives and this program
would hopefully help them to feel they
have a more worthwhile life in the com-
munity," Daymond said.
Although CPS offers a variety of pro-
grams for individuals and small groups,
