said Mr. Metcalfe. "Even the
criticism is sometimes constructive
because at leastpeople are talking
about company affairs."
What has made the weekly video
news show a success, Mr. Metcalfe
says, is its professional quality and
its high level of objectivity.. "We
have worke.d hard to maintain that
level of objectivity. a'eopie know and
understand TV and they can see
through a bad job almost
immediately."
To establish that high level of
credibility, Champion deliberately
went outside the plant four years ago
and persuaded local television
reporter Glen Creamer, Huron
correspondent of CKNX-TV to take
over the production and presentation
of the show.
Mr. Creamer wasn't at all sure in
the beginning that such an idea
would work. He worried about the
same things that Mr. Metcalfe did.

Ten a.m. each Friday is coffee
break time in most parts
of the Champion Road
Machinery plant. It is also time for
Newsbreak, a weekly closed circuit
television program devoted to news,
comment and announcements about
company affairs.
Invented as a major internal
communications vehicle to keep all
parts of the Champion informed and
up to date on company affairs.
Newsbreak has endured some tough
times to become a regular and
welcome part of plant life.
Bill Metcalfe, director of
marketing services for Champion, is
the first to admit that it has been a
long and, at times, difficult task to
establish Newsbreak as a news
vehicle which everyone follows with
interest and, more importantly,
trusts to deliver major company
messages and happenings.
Six years later, however, it has
emerged with the kind of ratings
that please both management and
employees. "I think it makes people
