But the company made a major
commitment to MRP both in terms
of time and dollars. Management,
however, is in agreement that MRP
is an investment that will pay
dividends.
A company -wide system that
impacts on all departments, MRP
'gives the company better inventory
control and should, ultimately, lead
to a more cost-efficient operation.
"The system will help us balance
inventory and it will give the buyers
more time; they were always
fighting fires," Rumig explained.
"It's a company -wide system and a
great planning tool but people will
make it work."
Training and education has
extended through all ranks in the
company in the most comprehensive
education program ever offered at
Champion.
Kevin's four-year job as co-
ordinator of the MRP program has
been a demanding but interesting
venture. He can see the merits of the
system through the workload,the
intangibles, the unexpected'
computer breakdowns and the long
hours.

DENNIS SCHMIDT
Involved in the implementation of
manufacturing resource. planning
largely through his own initiative,
Dennis Schmidt says the system
will, ostensibly, give the company
better control of inventory and dollar
movement.
A member oA the cost accounting
department for six years, Schmidt the
has been assisting with tying
financial end of the operation. He
suggests the system will make
Champion more cost efficient.
"There are obvious benefits to
accounting and it will give us more
control of inventory and movement,"
Dennis explained. "It will also help
_
us with dollar movement. -..t. It has
already saved the company money."
Inventory control presented
problems for the company before
and the flow of goods was more
erratic. MRP has tightened up
control of the flow of goods and
made departments and employees
more accountable. MRP has brought
people together at Champion and
•fostered more communication
Schmidt said.
Reporting to controller Jim
Collins, Dennis and the other three
members of the department handle
grader and labor costing and •
reporting. A member of the MRP
project team, Dennis attended
training sessions in Atlanta and
California and now acts as
secretary.
Closed stores has helped Inventory control.
