MRP, or manufacturing resource planning, is a formalized way of doing business and its a system the company has been wonting 4 implementing for the past three years. A man who has literally immersed himself into the MRP system and the intricacies of its implementation, Kevin Rumig, says it's fairly obvious what the system will do for the company; fine tuning it is the problem right now. Formerly employed in distribution, Mr. Rumig was hired as the MRP co-ordinator three years ago. After accepting the appointment, he was involved in extensive training courses in Atlanta Florida and California and part of his job now involves teaching the MRP project team. While the transition has not been smooth, Rumig is more than confident that the system will impact on Champion's abilities to manufacture a quality product at a lower price. "The cutover to MRP was made August 30 and we're just fine tuning the .,.stem now," he explained. 'Now when thei a are problems, we can find the cause and solve them. MRP is a formalized system of doing business or a plan to have what you need when you need it." Admitting the system led to all kinds of minor problems, Rumig said those problems resulted from a heavy workload. "I know we can fine tune it. It will take two or three months to make adjustments." A task force was established to monitor and handle the problems associated with the system's implementation and while computers handle the "number crunching", Rumig emphasizes that it still takes people to make it work.
