graders to sell parts
The way Vince Young views it,
Champion only makes motor
graders to be in the parts
business.
While he would concede a definite
bias in the viewpoint, the sales of
motor grader parts is one of the
fastest growing segments of the
company and an area that holds ..
pi uu'iise of expansion.
And Young should know what he's
talking about. In a career that hp
spanned nearly four decades wit
Champion, he has personally set the
profit position on 10,000 spare parts
for all models of graders from
1948-86.
Parts and service is a major part
of Champion's business and parts
are sold through a network of
distributors in more than 85
countries around the world. The
parts business may be lucrative, but
is also competitive and a good
relationship between distributor and
manufacturer is essential Young
claims.
"Our parts are sold all over the
world and you have to be honest with
your distributors and establish a
good relationship," he explained.
"You have to serve the customer
and provide the parts at a
competitive price to be effective in
the market. If you can do that, you
can make money and the sale of
parts is becoming an important part
of the company.'"

standardization of components has
helped reduce the parts inventory
slightly and proper diagnosing of the
parts used most often has augered
well for the department.. About 500
parts out of the 10,000 offered may
make up as much as 85 per cent of
the parts sale business. "If you can
control that segment, it's a big share
of the market."
In order to foster and maintain
that relationship between dealer and
supplier, Vince has travelled
extensively for Champion, citing a
definite need for direct contact.

his parents' Goderich Township
