Some Early History...
he original Credit Union in Goderich was formed by
parishioners of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, with
Les Pitblado as• President.
Many residents of Goderich, who were not members of St.
Peter's Church, were interested in the credit union
movement, and, therefore, a meeting was arranged by Mr.
Pitblado with these residents, many of whom worked at
Dominion Road Machinery Co. Limited. With the help of Mr. Vic Roy,
Manager of the Clinton Community Credit Union, an application for
charter was signed by the applicants in the British Exchange Hotel,
which has since been destroyed by fire, and a charter for Goderich
Community Credit Union Limited was received from the Provincial
Secretary of Ontario dated June 29th, 1954.
The following is a list of applicants: Xhartered Members): Charles
Woods, George Hamilton, Stephen Helesic, Edwin Lee, Warren James,
Charles B. Stewart, Jerry Whaley, William Walter Payne, Laura
Stewart, Thomas Hamilton, John Bedour, Donald H. MacKay, Elgin
Fisher, Albert Powell, William Kolohon, Harold Stewart, Ralph Neville,
John Videan, Harry Beattie, William Hugh Johnston, James Morris,
William Bradley, David Harman, George Henry Schwanz.
St. Peter's Credit Union amalgamated with the Community Credit
Union and the first office of the Community Credit Union was located
on East Street. Charles Woods was Treasurer and Les Pitblado and
George Hamilton were appointed to the Credit Committee.
The second office was located on Hamilton Street and Stephen
Helesic was appointed Treasurer -Manager.
The third was located at the back of the Bedford Hotel on South
Street, but business was growing fast enough to warrant the Credit
Union purchasing its own building at 39 St.. David Street in 1962.
The founder's pin was presented to Les Pitblado at the annual
meeting of the Credit Union in November, 1966, for his many years of
service.
