For almost 20 years, Champion_
has extended a helping hand
to the sons and daughters of
its employees, through its
scholarship and bursary program.
First offered for engineering and
technical courses in 1966,
scholarships and bursaries are
awarded annually to the sons and
daughters of employees who
graduate from high school with high
academic standing. The winners
must also pursue a post -secondary
education and must be well-rounded
individuals, involved in various
activities both at school and in the
community.
Scholarships in the amount of
$1,500 are awarded to students
entering university and the financing
continues through four years,
provided the student notifies the
coinmittee of progress and intention
to continue their education.
Bursaries in the amount of $1,000
are awarded to students in their first
and second years of post secondary
education at the community college
level.
Normally, one scholarship and one
bursary is awarded each year. Last
year, however, two scholarships
were awarded and this year, due to
the quality of the applicants, four
scholarships and two bursaries were
awarded.
If each of this year's scholarship
recipients continue to qualify for the
award for four years, the value of
the scholarship will be $6,000 for
each student for a total of $24,000 for
the four students. The bursaries
would total $4,000 over two years
bringing this year's programme
total to $28,000.
This year the company handed out
a total of $17,000 to new scholarship
and bursary winners, and those who
are continuing in the program.
The awards are not limited to
those attending high school in
Goderich but is extended to include
the sons and daughters of all
Champion employees, including the
sales company in Toronto.
Many students have earned
degrees and gone on to make their
mark in the world with a little
financial assistance from Champion
Road Machinery Ltd.
Many students have benefited
from Champion's bursary and
scholarship prmgram. Tanners
this year were Rose Marks,
Cindy Todgham, Mary -Jo Col.
Ilns and Mark Jeffrey. The two
bursary winners were Kelly
Wilson and Susan Marks.
Dave Weaver, (im Fritzley and
Stephen de Boer received
cheques as part of their con.
