first and only employee.
Today, under the direction of
Wayne Mason, the sales company
has four sales and service outlets
and 90 employees.
For Mason, a 20 -year employee
with Champion, his appointment as
vice-president and general manager
in February of this year, comes one
year after the head office of the
sales company was moved to
Toronto. Originally hired as office
manager, Mason was a salesman for
10 years and in 1969 was given the
Niagara Penninsula and Metro
Toronto sales territory.
Still a salesman at heart, Mason
says that Champion's solid base in
Ontario helps the company to
compete elsewhere.
"We have 90 employees working in
our outlets in Toronto, North Bay,

said. "We're averaging 80 per cent
of the market in Ontario and there
are over 2,200 Champion graders in
the province. So we have a good
base in Ontario."
While 95 per cent of the sales are
completed through the tendering
process, the company employs 11
salespeople in the ,province. The shift
to Toronto has helped centralize the
sales and service operation of
Champion.
"People come away with a new
concept of the company if they get a
chance to visit Goderich," he said.
"We're known as the grader people
but we should do it better than
anyone else because we specialize.
We also have to provide after sale
service because we have to make it

Moving the sales company's head
office to Toronto has put Mason and
his staff closer to the markets and
transportation routes of Ontario.
Also, his experience as a salesman
has stood him in good stead since he
has had contact with both
contractors and municipalities.
The company also provides
information and advice to the Road
Superintendents Association and
equipment and staff has been
donated for schools sponsored by the
Ontario Good Roads Association.
The sales company feasts on
Champion's reputation, but it is a
reputation they must maintain.
"Integrity channels down through
our organization," he said. "We're
making the best product on the
market but, we're not finished
peaking yet. The hardest part is
putting your money where your
