6C PION GSS/Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1986 Fin nee Murray Hord has been with Champion Road Machinery Ltd. less than a year, but it 41idn't take long for the people and product of the company to impress the corporate controller -secretary. Taking over for Don Kent in Novemer of 1985, Hord is corporate controller and secretary of the Champion group of companies. With manufacturing experience as general -manager of George White and Sons, Hord welcomes the responsibility of the senior position. vrting directly 10.: .:_t-* E9Vlvc' vice-president, Steve Symes, the finance department also employs three divisional controllers: Jim Collins in Goderich; Doug Smith in Brampton and Lloyd Powell in Columbia, South Carolina. The control function relates to the financial control of the company but Hord also has responsibility as secretary. "I keep minute books as secretary but a lot of my function deals with financing, documentation, administration and reporting," he explained. "I make sure the numbers are on target. The offshore financing and arranging of bid bonds and letters of credit is handled by Jim Peesker." • • �.:�..�;r•tYs��raj 3: f,=.i:�°�,r:F�}'�w:jtf'f6 •':',,,!'t�iy}a iC • The finance department has been heavily involved in the company's major capital expenditure program to upgrade technology and training. "We have upgraded our plant substantially and spent $6 mullion in machinery to keep Champion modern and involved in new technology. We've also been involved in financing major programs like the robotics equipment in the welding department and the training and job development program which will continue into next year." "Campion is unique in that it is a major manufacturer in a small town so we have to take advantage of programs that assist us with development and training. The equipment we have in the training centre is second to none." The implementation of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) will impact on all departments at Champion and a successful program will mean a more cost-efficient company. "In the next year or two, the program will help put us above the competition," Hord said. "Through cost reduction, it will solidify our 'market and help us to increase our share of the United States' market. "What impressed me about the company was its fairness to people and how conscious the company is of the employees. I think they do, a good job at being communicators and they are very conscious of the implications of being a major employer. Champion's image and Champion's product is not only high profile around the world, Hord suggests, but adds that company and product are well respected. "I was impressed with the product.
