While Symes is relatively new to the company, having been named vice-president in charge of finance and administration in 1980 and executive vice-president two years later, he suggests that Champion is positioned well for the future because of that strong employee base, a commitment to excellence, innovation and the ability of management to react swiftly. "In 1982, the company had to make some tough decisions but it reacted quickly and firmly and those decisions have positioned us well for the future," he said. "We moved quickly and boldly at a time when other companies didn't survive. With the family ownership, management Steve Symes is able to communicate well." It is that ability to communicate, at all levels within the organization and with the customer, that is distinguishing Champion from other Canadian manufacturers. The company is committed to es,!!explains, adding that employees are aware of what's going on around them through weekly Newsbreak programs and by providing feedback to management through quality circles and a suggestion program. It is that interaction with employees that Champion craves most. "A feedback system is needed. The employees know more about the operation of the company today but we need that feedback," Symes said. "The suggestion program has been revitalized and is working quite well. Quality circles generated great things but it peaked and is now on the decline. It will be revived and the two programs can complement Champion's Executive - vice president, Steve Symes, with Huron - Bruce MP Murray Cardiff and mayor Eileen Palmer, after the signing of the Job Development agreement° one another. In the future of quality circles, the emphasis should be that it provides more opportunity to communicate with the company." The company has learned some valuable lessons about developing the talents and responsibilities of its employees.
