n East Wawanosh Township, road
building began in the 1850s as
people moved into the area. At
first, roads consisted of trails blazed
through bush; then later roads were
built with the aid of axes, shovel,
oxen, fnanpower and later,
horsepower.
Culverts, at the time, were built of
stone or 'wood and bridges were also
contructed out of wood before being
replaced by cement and steel
structures.
Prior to 1939, horse-drawn graders
were used to maintain roads but, in
1939, the first motorized Champion
gradLr was purchased for $3,500 and
a new shed was built to house it on
Lot. 31, Conc. 10.
The 1939 Champion was used only
in the summer because it proved to
be too heavy for the roads in the
spring. In 1948, concession roads
were plowed by Joe Kerr

In 1956, as pictured above, the
township purchased another grader,
with snowplow equipment, for
$24,700 allowing the township to plow
all its roads.
Most of the roads had to be rebuilt
and widened at this time and new
culverts and bridges were also built
to allow for summer and winter
maintenance and additional traffic
on township roads.
In 1959 the roads department
purcahsed the former Brick United
Church but in 1972 the shed was
burned to the ground. Included in the
loss was a 1966 Champion grader
valued at $24,780. It was replaced by
a 1971 Champion for $27,000. In 1973,
a new municipal garage was built on
Conc. 9.
In 1983, the township purchased
another new Champion grader for
$136,330.
