confidence returnet!
GSS/Wednesday. Nov. 5, 1986
fter the war
hen Air Vice Marshall J.A.
Sully took over Dominion
Road Machinery Co., the
Signal -Star reported the matter on
the front page of its May 17th
edition in 1945 under the heading,
Change in. Control of Local Industry.
The paper reporter) that A V M
Sully, recently retired trom the
Royal Canadian Air Force, was born
in Ontario and moved to Western
Canada while still a youth. He
served in the first World War and
afterwards was intimately
associated with the development of
military aviation in Canada.
In the present war he was in
charge of Air Force recruiting and
was head of the personnel branch of
the RCAF. In civil life he held an
executive position with a large
insurance company at Montreal the
article said.
The company had been owned by
Cecil Attridge since 1938. During the
war period he had several important
war contracts, some of which are
still in effect, and had one of the
largest payrolls in Goderich, the
paper reported. Active in municipal
affiars, Attridge was the town's
deputy -reeve at the time of the sale
of the business.
That same week, the paper also
reported about a special church
service at Knox Presbyterian
Church in the aftermath of victory in
ureai Wei A inrgc congregation
turned out to honor the war heroes
and celebrate an end to the war.
At the same time, a federal
election was heating up and
nomination meetings were taking
'place across the country`.
Only a small audience attended a
nomination meeting for North Huron
at the Wingham Town Hall where
incumbent Member of Parliament,
Lewis Elston Cardiff, Brussels;
Morley Mills, Ripley and soldier,
Douglas Ross Nairn of Goderich
addressed the meeting.
Cardiff, the sitting member for
five years, said the Conservatives
could provide a square deal for all
Canadians with leader John
Bracken. His main opponent, Major
Nairn, argued that MacKenzie King,
Champion pioneered the use of hydraulics in 1930s and its D462
model manufactured in 1946 featured many improvements.
Liberal Party Leader, would help
the men and women of"the services
return to a fair deal in Canada.
It was an exciting period of history
as Canadians rejoiced in the
conclusion of the war and looked
forward to prosperous times.
The war effort required a lot in
terms of manpower and supplies and
it was interesting to note the
advertisement of Ernie
Breckenridge, hardware store
owner, who advised that, while there
was a scarcity of certain lines, he
would try and fill hardware orders.
At the time, the Dominion Grocery
Store was advertising 16 ounces of
coffee for 41 cents, two loaves of
bread could be bought for 15 cents,
a 25-1b. bag of flour cost 25 cents and
three rolls of toilet tissue also went
for 25 cents.
