A.V.M. Sully
Much of the country, and the
province for that matter,
was still reeling from the
exhilaration and excitement of VE -
Day, the Ai: Vice
lJay, May i , a o-sv, when
Marshall J.A. Sully took control of
the Dominion Road Machinery
Company.
Just four days later, Marshall
Sully became president and
managing director of the company
that was located on Maitland Road.
At that time, the company also
included directors J.M. Dunwoody,
R.C.„Hays, A.B. Roberts and H. W.
Parker.
The building, once known as the
Artcraft Building and valued at
$50,000, was purchased two years
earlier for $5,000. It took another
$10,000 to fix up the premises.
The Dominion Road Machinery
Company was very much involved in
the war effort, both at the Maitland
Road plant and at the airport. The
company was also manufacturing a
wide assortment of equipment for
the road -building industry and its list
rri
tared goods included
everything from graders to rock
crushers, sweepers and conveyors.
When Marshall Sully left the Royal
Canadian Air Force and took control
of the company, it was a small
manufacturing concern with less
than 60 employees. The company
was anything but dynamic and had
total sales of $234,000.
But A.V.M. Sully was a man of
indomitable spirit who envisioned
that his company would one day
build thousands of quality road
graders for a world-wide market.
Together with sons John and Bruce
he set about establishing the
foundation of that dream, a dream
that he instilled in employees.
