hope for a
new beginning
he year was 1945 and after
almost six years of continuous

the unconditional surrender of
Germany on May 7.
The very next day was celebrated
as VE -Day in much of the free
world, and Canadians from coast to
coast celebrated the end of a long
and costly fight with the Germans.
Thousands upon thousands of people
thronged city streets, town parks
and village squares to celebrate the
good news. The war had virtually
ended.
Just three months later, the United
States would drop atomic bombs on
Japan, Germany's ally, killing.
thousands of people in the cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The
Japanese surrendered and VJ-Day
-R
was proclaimed August 14, 1945.
The war effort had taken its toll on
Canadians, regardless of age and
sex. Especially in human,
Husbands, fathers, sons and wives
were lost and families, communities
(and a country, mourned the price of
freedom.
It was a difficult time. North
America had just barely recovered
the Great Depression and was
beginning to show signs of strength.
The demands and ravages of war
touched almost everyone in Canada,
but to the industrial basin of
Southwestern Ontario, war meant
industrial production. The demands
of war put everyone to work, women
and men, as a once idle industry was
revved intci. high gear.
