Times were
difficult
during the
Depression
The 1930s were difficult times
for everyone and the
Depression hit Ontario with
great force. Because of the crash of
the economy, a great many people
were without jobs and, without
sc,(4alacci5t t-wo to,.ease the burden,
providing tor one's tamiiy was
almost impossible.
The severity of the economic
downturn in 1929 can hardly be
appreciated today and it lasted until
1933 when the economy began to pick
up slightly. But in 1931, it was
estimated that some 30 per cent of
the wage earners were out of work.
As the Depression lingered on,
municipalities were forced to feed
many of its • citizens and provide jobs
for unemployed men in make-work
projects.
Still, the relief was meagre and
many people suffered.
People were looking for escape
routes in the 1930s and Hollywood
